Here is a review of the October 4th, 2022 lunchtime presentation by Thomas Nagel, Mechanical Eng., founder and partner of Tom Spike Structured Innovation in Berlin.
Okay catchy title, but what does that have to do with us? Well for starters, you should know that Thomas (Tom) is a Six Sigma Master Black Belt by Whirlpool, Bombardier and the European Six Sigma Club. He was also Manager at Whirlpool European Headquarter, Germany, a Master specialized in Innovative Design of INSA Strasbourg and Engineering Director at Bombardier.
He spoke to us about applying his approach at resolving some everyday issues in the coffee shop that he and his wife founded on a small corner in downtown Berlin – the Nachspunkt – a 25 seat indoor and just as many outdoor, where they serve in-house roasted coffee beans and baked goods. And in Berlin, well, there are a lot of coffee shops.
Anyways, Tom explained his learning curve at applying standard Six Sigma approaches and his employees’ reactions. He started with the implementation of the Pain Principle in four blocks: the pull principle; standard operating procedures (SOP); Poka yoke and finally supply management.
Pull principle: ensuring you grind your coffee on time. SOPs: Pictures on the wall to ensure consistency – thought demeaning to the professional baristas. Poka yoke: discussions on new products, colour-coded equipment, smart coffee maker won’t allow you to select a type if there is not a sufficient grain supply. Supply management: a deep analysis of various available data in charts on profits, walk-ins, favourite products, etc., discussions on waiting time and customer presence, regression diagrams confirming that more preferred ice cream on warm days and the use of pictures of their baked goods in the windows to attract passersby. Oh, does snow affect our foot traffic or is homemade ice cream better than commercial?
But there is still the elusive unknowns associated with the batches of coffee beans which require reformulation to get the perfect cup and how to improve the look of the baked goods. Maybe that would be for TRIZ (Russian: teoriya resheniya izobretatelskikh zadatch, literally “theory of inventive problem solving”) is “the next evolutionary step in creating an organized and systematic approach to problem solving developed by the Soviet inventor and science-fiction author Genrich Altshuller (1926-1998) and his colleagues, beginning in 1946. D’accord, le titre est accrocheur, mais en quoi cela nous concerne-t-il? Eh bien pour commencer, vous devez savoir que Thomas (Tom) est un Six Sigma Master Black Belt par Whirlpool, Bombardier et le Club européen Six Sigma. Il nous a parlé de l’application de son approche à la résolution de certains problèmes quotidiens dans le café que lui et sa femme ont fondé dans un petit coin du centre-ville de Berlin – le Nachspunkt – un café de 25 places à l’intérieur et autant à l’extérieur, où ils servent des grains de café torréfiés sur place et des produits de boulangerie. Et à Berlin, eh bien, il y a beaucoup de cafés.
Quoi qu’il en soit, Tom a expliqué sa courbe d’apprentissage dans l’application des approches Six Sigma standard et les réactions de ses employés. Il a commencé par mettre en œuvre le principe de la douleur en quatre blocs: le principe de traction, les procédures opérationnelles standard (POS), le Poka yoke et enfin la gestion de l’approvisionnement.

Gestion de l’offre: une analyse approfondie des diverses données disponibles sous forme de graphiques sur les bénéfices, les entrées sans rendez-vous, les produits préférés, etc., des discussions sur le temps d’attente et la présence des clients, des diagrammes de régression confirmant que les clients préfèrent les glaces les jours de chaleur et l’utilisation de photos de leurs pâtisseries dans les vitrines pour attirer les passants. Oh, la neige affecte-t-elle le trafic piétonnier ou la crème glacée faite maison est-elle meilleure que celle du commerce?
Mais il y a toujours les inconnues insaisissables associées aux lots de grains de café qui doivent être reformulés pour obtenir la tasse parfaite et la façon d’améliorer l’aspect des produits de boulangerie. Peut-être est-ce là le rôle de la TRIZ (Russian: teoriya resheniya izobretatelskikh zadatch, literallement “théorie de la résolution inventive des problèmes”) est une approche heuristique destinée à résoudre des problèmes d’innovation, principalement techniques élaborée à partir de 1946 par l’ingénieur et auteur de science-fiction soviétique Genrich Altshuller (1926-1998). In case you did not notice, our October 2022 event (happening on October 26th, to be precise) will be an in-person event for the first time since February 2020.
Going back to that “eventful” time, that in-person event featured speaker Vincent Béchard giving a presentation on “How Simulation Can Enhance Scheduling by Avoiding Lean Waste”.
The following month was supposed to feature an in-person “Women in Quality” panel event on March 25th. As we all know, that evening had to be cancelled.
That said, from April 2020 until September 2022, this section has been able to provide its members and non-members alike with online webinars. It was certainly not easy at first, and there have been hiccups along the way, but for the most part the webinars have been well executed, well attended and much appreciated.
So for our event this month, the Leadership Team decided that it was time to try an in-person event. As usual for our October events, the General Assembly will take place first, followed by an workshop on how to best deal with multiple management systems. As someone who has spent most of his Quality career directly with/in said systems, I am looking forward to it.

Ce mois-ci, la soirée webinaire du 15 juin était un peu différente car il y avait deux volets: d’abord la présentation du Prix Denis Pronovost 2022 par Marcel Charbonneau, suivi d’un atelier de travail sur ce Que doivent/souhaitent apprendre les professionnels de la qualité? animé par Raymond Dyer.
Nous avons collecté 12 réponses à notre sondage. La satisfaction globale était de 95.4% et les participants ont particulièrement apprécié le sujet avec 100,0%. Pour ce qui est de la satisfaction pour l’approche , la présentation et l’échange, ils ont reçu 91,7% chacun.
Le webinaire a débuté par la présentation du Prix Denis Pronovost 2022 par Marcel Charbonneau à Patrick Barnes, un étudiant du Certificat gestion et assurance de la qualité de l’École de technologie supérieure. Il nous a présenté le travail d’équipe réalisé dans le cadre de son cours sur la “Réduction des erreurs documentaires au service analytique” d’une entreprise pharmaceutique. Tous les professionnels présents l’ont bien apprécié puisqu’elle cadrait très bien au thème de l’atelier de travail, une belle démonstration de l’application sur le terrain des outils en qualité.
Raymond Dyer, président de la section et responsable du programme, a ensuite fait une brève présentation des différents volets associés aux technologies représentant les domaines et expertises associées aux professionnels en qualité, et a ensuite demandé aux participants d’identifier selon eux, en groupes de travail, quelles étaient les compétences et expertises requises par les professionnels d’aujourd’hui, de les regrouper et d’en prioriser au moins cinq.
Notons que ce webinaire a surtout attiré des gens de Montréal et de ses environs, mais nous en avions aussi d’Ottawa, Toronto et Chicago. C’est toujours un plaisir pour l’équipe d’avoir une participation si diversifiée.
This month, the June 15th webinar was a little different because there were two parts: first the presentation of the 2022 Denis Pronovost Award by Marcel Charbonneau, followed by a workshop on What do quality professionals need/want to learn? hosted by Raymond Dyer.
We collected 12 responses to our survey. The overall satisfaction was 95.4% and the participants particularly appreciated the topic with a 100.0% rating. As for the satisfaction for the approach, the presenter and the exchange, they received 91.7%.
The webinar started with the presentation of the 2022 Denis Pronovost Award by Marcel Charbonneau to Patrick Barnes, a student of the Certificate in Quality Management and Assurance from École de technologie supérieure. He presented his team’s work on “Reducing Documentary Errors in the Analytical Department” of a pharmaceutical company. All the professionals present appreciated it because it fitted in very well with the theme of the workshop, a fine demonstration of the application of quality tools in the field.
Raymond Dyer, Section Chair and Program Chair, then gave a brief presentation of the different technology components representing the domains and expertise associated with quality professionals, and then asked participants in working groups, to identify what they thought were the skills and expertise required by today’s professionals, to group and prioritize at least five.
Note that this webinar attracted mostly people from Montreal and its surroundings, but we also had people from Ottawa, Toronto and Chicago. It is always a pleasure for the team to have such a diverse participation.

I recently discussed Quality 4.0 and how it affected the Quality professional. According to ASQ references (refer to https://lnkd.in/eJKudJtK), Quality 4.0 brings together Industry 4.0’s advanced digital technologies with quality excellence to drive substantial performance and effectiveness improvements.
That’s quite a mouthful! Let’s try to break it down into simpler terms. Digital technologies are electronic tools, systems, devices, and resources that generate, store, or process data. Bottom line, it’s all about being able to analyze and make use of what is now becoming a growing database of data to discover trends, determine actions, and react much more quickly. Quality 4.0 uses these various digital technologies to improve processes, products, solutions, and customer and employee satisfaction.

J’ai récemment discuté de la qualité 4.0 et de son impact sur les professionnels de la qualité. Dr. Farnoosh Naderkhani, ASQ Member, Assistant Professor @ Concordia, Student Outreach Committee Chair (un texte en français suit)
In the second seminar series for students held on July 7th, 2022 via Zoom, Dr. Matthew Hu, a Senior Vice-President, Engineering and Quality at HAYLION Technologies delivered an interesting talk entitled “Robustness Thinking in Design for Reliability”. The seminar started with a 45-minute talk by Dr. Hu, followed by questions and discussion from the audience.
It was a very successful seminar and well appreciated. Approximately 25 students attended the event. Based on survey results, the overall satisfaction was 93.8% and participants particularly appreciated the exchange with 90%. Satisfaction for the subject and the approach reported as 100% and 90%, respectively. The satisfaction for the presenter was 95%.
As Student Outreach Committee Chair, I will try my best to organize at least one more seminar for this year. Stay tuned for upcoming seminar series.
Lors de la deuxième série de séminaires pour les étudiants qui s’est tenue le 7 juillet 2022 via Zoom, le Dr. Matthew Hu, vice-président senior, ingénierie et qualité chez HAYLION Technologies, a présenté un exposé intéressant intitulé “Robustness Thinking in Design for Reliability”. Le séminaire a débuté par un exposé de 45 minutes du Dr. Hu, suivi de questions et d’une discussion avec le public.

Hello! I hope you are having a wonderful summer (that’s right, having, summer is not over yet ;-)).
The past 2.5 years has brought about many changes in our lives, both personal and professional.
On a professional level, I am grateful that my work has not been negatively affected: the only change is that I mainly do it from home. At first a full 5 days a week, and now for 3 days from home and 2 in the office.
With regards to the actual tasks that make up my current Quality work, the biggest change that I have had to adjust to is the practice of conducting an audit virtually. Since the late 90s when I started working in the Quality field, any audits I was involved in (either as the auditor or auditee) were conducted face-to-face and in-person. Eventually with the advent of streaming video, being able to video-conference became a valuable asset to companies and society in general. However, auditing stayed pretty much in the “tangible” realm . . . we still wanted to see and deal with issues/processes/people in the flesh. But with what the last 2.5 years have given us, the switchover to virtual audits became a necessity, and no longer a “just in case”.
For myself in my current Supplier Quality role, this year found me completing 2 supplier audits virtually. I actually found the amount of preparation about the same as an in-person audit, and the content remained unchanged (agenda, questionnaire, audit report, evidence, NCRs, action plan).
The one new thing I had to consider before the audit was that the suppliers would be ready from a video standpoint. With both audits, I set up pre-audit calls with the auditees to work this out. I use TEAMs with my work, so it was important to assure that the supplier was also familiar and comfortable in using it; in both cases they were. That said, with one supplier, they needed to become “TEAMs mobile”. It is nice to have TEAMs set up on your desktop and be able to talk and share documents/records; however as the auditor, I want to be able to see the company and how it works (as you would do if you were present onsite). This meant setting up TEAMs on the smartphones of key employees involved in the audit, that way I could see and interact with the shop floor, visit the inspection areas, quarantine areas, etc. Once all this was set up and taken care of, the audits were able to be conducted relatively smoothly.
Although my audits were both with suppliers in the Eastern time zone, one thing that may require adjustment is when you have to virtually audit a supplier outside of your time zone. If you are in Montreal and your supplier is in California, then most likely you will need to adjust your working hours to accommodate your auditee in California . . . certainly not something you would think about if you were to get on a plane and go to the supplier and put yourself in their time zone.
In conclusion, although I still prefer the in-person audit, I am very satisfied that had to conduct a few virtual audits this year, in order to get that experience under my belt and feel more comfortable with it.

The election process involves that the Nominating Committee submits a slate of officers to be approved at the General Assembly. To hold a Section Officer position, you must be a Full, Senior or Fellow ASQ Member in good standing affiliated with our Section. To submit alternate nominations for Section officer positions, please complete and submit this Nomination Form.
The proposed Leadership Team slate will be published in the October edition of the Newsletter and the new SLT will be approved at our planned Annual General Assembly to be held on October 26th, 2022. Here is a complete listing of current ASQ Montreal Section positions.

Dr. Farnoosh Naderkhani, ASQ Member, Assistant Professor @ Concordia, Student Outreach Committee Chair
In the second seminar series for students held on July 7th, 2022 via Zoom, Dr. Matthew Hu, Senior Vice-President, Engineering and Quality at HAYLION Technologies delivered an interesting talk entitled “Robustness Thinking in Design for Reliability”. The seminar started with a 45-minute talk by Dr. Hu, followed by questions and discussion from the audience.
It was a very successful seminar and well appreciated. Approximately 25 students attended the event. Based on survey results, the overall satisfaction was 93.8% and participants particularly appreciated the exchange with 90%. Satisfaction for the subject and the approach reported as 100% and 90%, respectively. The satisfaction for the presenter was 95%.
As Student Outreach Committee Chair, I will try my best to organize at least one more seminar for this year. Stay tuned for upcoming seminar series.

Marcel Charbonneau, T.P., ASQ CQA, a mené le projet de la Section de Montréal pour créer un prix de 500 $ en l’honneur de Denis Pronovost, décédé en juin 2015. Par sa contribution exceptionnelle à l’association, son leadership et son implication, Denis a grandement participé à la promotion de la qualité du français au Québec et était un invité et conférencier fréquent de la section.
Rappellons que Denis avait une carrière de plus de trente années d’expérience de travail principalement en enseignement et consultation dans le domaine de la gestion, de l’assurance qualité et des audits. En 1990, avec Pierre Caillibot, il a fondé Academia Qualitas au Québec, où ils ont élaborés des cours et formé des professionnels de la qualité dans les secteurs de la fabrication, des services et des laboratoires. Denis a été membre du Comité consultatif canadien de l’ISO/TC 176, particulièrement actif dans le groupe de travail sur la terminologie, dans le groupe de travail sur les interprétations et dans le groupe de travail conjoint CCC/ISO/TC 176/CAC/ISO TC 207 sur l’audit et sur l’avenir de la norme d’audit ISO 19011.
Il était aussi auditeur principal de systèmes de management de qualité (SMQ) certifié par le Registrar Accreditation Board (Conseil d’accréditation des bureaux d’enregistrement, RAB) et membre senior de l’American Society for Quality (ASQ). Denis a été membre actif et président de la Section Montréal francophone de l’ASQ de 2012-14. Il a été conférencier et instructeur en Amérique du nord, Amérique centrale, Europe et Asie. Plus de cinq fois, il est venu à la section de Montréal nous présenter l’évolution du dossier des normes ISO 9000 et ISO 14000. En 2000, il a publié Internal Quality Auditing (Les audits internes de qualité), un guide pour réaliser des audits internes efficaces, édité par l’ASQ.

Ce 8 juin 2022, Marcel a remis le certificat à Patrick Barnes, étudiant au Certificat en gestion et assurance de la qualité de l’École de technologie supérieure, un programme multidisciplinaire qui offre une formation ou un perfectionnement en gestion et en assurance de la qualité. Patrick nous présentera un résumé de son projet d’amélioration de la qualité à l’ETS.
Marcel Charbonneau, T.P., ASQ CQA, led the Montreal Section project to create a $500 award in honor of Denis Pronovost, who passed away in June 2015. Through his outstanding contribution to the association, his leadership and his involvement, Denis greatly participated in the promotion of quality in French in Quebec and was a frequent guest and speaker at the Section.
Denis had a career of more than thirty years of work experience mainly in teaching and consulting in the field of management, quality assurance and audits. In 1990, with Pierre Caillibot, he founded Academia Qualitas in Quebec, where they developed courses and trained quality professionals in the manufacturing, service and laboratory sectors. Denis was a member of the Canadian Advisory Committee to ISO/TC 176, particularly active in the Terminology Working Group, 
the Interpretations Working Group and the joint CAC/ISO/TC 176/CAC/ISO TC 207 Working Group on Auditing and the Future of the ISO 19011 Audit Standard. He was also a lead auditor of quality management systems (QMS) certified by the Registrar Accreditation Board (RAB) and a senior member of the American Society for Quality (ASQ). Denis was an active member and Chair of the ASQ Montreal Francophone Section from 2012-14.
Denis was a speaker and instructor in North America, Central America, Europe and Asia. On more than five occasions, he came to the Montreal Section to present the evolution of the ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 standards. In 2000, he authored Internal Quality Auditing, a guide to conducting more effective internal audits, published by ASQ.
On June 8th, 2022, Marcel presented the award to Patrick Barnes, a student at the Certificat en gestion et assurance de la qualité de l’École de technologie supérieure (Management and Quality Assurance Certificate) of the École de technologie supérieure, a multidisciplinary program that provides training or development in management and quality assurance. Patrick will present a summary of his quality improvement project at the ETS.

In our first seminar series for students, we had invited Ms. Nastaran Enshaei on May 19, 2022. It was a very successful seminar about the different aspects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the healthcare domain with a special focus on faster diagnosis of COVID-19 disease from lung CT-Scan images.
As ASQ student outreach committee chair, I will continue organizing seminar series to benefit students in many aspects. We are in the process of planning our next seminar series in the first week of July. I had a chance to connect and talk to Dr. Matthew Hu, a Senior Vice President, Engineering and Quality at HAYLION Technologies, and he has accepted my invitation to give a presentation to our students in this seminar series. Dr. Hu has been a recognized exceptional industrial expert and leader in robust engineering, quality, reliability, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) and Robust Design for Reliability. He has made significant contributions as an engineer, specialist, six sigma master black belt, program manager, and executive during a long career in technology and product development, manufacturing, supply chain, commercialization and operation. We are so glad to have him on board for this event in July.

Dans notre première série de séminaires pour les étudiants, nous avions invité Mme Nastaran Enshaei le 19 mai 2022. Ce fut un séminaire très réussi sur les différents aspects de l’intelligence artificielle (IA) dans le domaine de la santé, avec un accent particulier sur le diagnostic plus rapide de la maladie COVID-19 à partir d’images CT-Scan des poumons.
En tant que présidente du comité de sensibilisation des étudiants de l’ASQ, je continuerai à organiser des séries de séminaires pour en faire profiter les étudiants sous de nombreux aspects. Nous sommes en train de planifier notre prochaine série de séminaires pour la première semaine de juillet. J’ai eu la chance d’entrer en contact et de discuter avec le Dr. Matthew Hu, Vice Président Sénior, Ingénierie et qualité chez HAYLION Technologies, et il a accepté mon invitation à faire une présentation à nos étudiants dans le cadre de cette série de séminaires. Le Dr. Hu est un expert industriel exceptionnel reconnu et un leader dans les domaines de l’ingénierie robuste, de la qualité, de la fiabilité, de la conception pour Six Sigma (DFSS) et de la conception robuste pour la fiabilité. Il a apporté d’importantes contributions en tant qu’ingénieur, spécialiste, ceinture noire six sigma master, gestionnaire de programme et dirigeant au cours d’une longue carrière dans le développement de technologies et de produits, la fabrication, la chaîne d’approvisionnement, la commercialisation et l’exploitation. On June 3rd, 2022, Ontario’s government enacted a right to disconnect act. It’ll be interesting to see where things go from there. Why is that of such interest to Quality professionals you ask? How many of you have worked extra hours just to keep Quality deliverables, e.g. audit reports, on time? How many of you keep an eye on smartphone notifications to ensure you’re not missing any important work events? How many actually respond, often by phone, to overnight and weekend messages to ensure key preparations, follow-ups, actions, etc. continue to progress even if you’re technically off hours?
There are times when many of us, including Quality professionals, need to invest extra efforts to complete certain phases of our Quality Management System initiatives. Sometimes, for example when dealing with different time zones, we do need to demonstrate the flexibility to work at different times. However, to constantly overwork and lose out on personal time for rest and enjoyment of other activities is not healthy, neither for Quality professionals nor their colleagues. It leads to a significant lowering of Quality of life and can lead to depression and/or burnout.
That’s why it’ll be interesting to see how this “right to disconnect” act will be deployed and what benefits and constraints it’ll be accompanied by. In the meantime, on June 15th, our Section will be hosting its last event, a networking workshop, before a well-deserved summer break. I hope to see many participate in helping us identify what Quality professionals need/want to learn. After that, we’ll see you again in September. Thanks!
Le 3 juin, 2022, le gouvernement de l’Ontario a promulgué une loi sur le droit à la déconnexion. Il sera intéressant de voir où les choses vont aller à partir de là. Pourquoi cela intéresse-t-il tant les professionnels de la qualité? Combien d’entre vous ont fait des heures supplémentaires pour que les produits livrables de qualité, par exemple les rapports d’audit, soient livrés à temps? Combien d’entre vous gardent un œil sur les notifications de leur téléphone pour s’assurer qu’ils ne manquent aucun événement professionnel important? Combien d’entre vous répondent, souvent par téléphone, aux messages reçus pendant la nuit et le week-end afin de s’assurer que les préparatifs, les suivis, les actions, etc. continuent de progresser même si vous êtes techniquement en dehors des heures de travail?
Il arrive que nombre d’entre nous, y compris les professionnels de la qualité, doivent déployer des efforts supplémentaires pour mener à bien certaines phases de leurs initiatives en matière de système de gestion de la qualité. Parfois, par exemple lorsque nous sommes confrontés à des fuseaux horaires différents, nous devons faire preuve de flexibilité pour travailler à des heures différentes. Cependant, le fait de se surmener constamment et de perdre du temps personnel pour se reposer et profiter d’autres activités n’est pas sain, ni pour les professionnels de la qualité ni pour leurs collègues. Cela entraîne une baisse significative de la qualité de vie et peut conduire à la dépression et/ou au burnout.
C’est pourquoi il sera intéressant de voir comment cette loi sur le “droit à la déconnexion” sera déployée et de quels avantages et contraintes elle s’accompagnera. En attendant, le 15 juin, notre section organisera son dernier événement, un atelier de réseautage, avant une pause estivale bien méritée. J’espère que vous serez nombreux à participer pour nous aider à identifier ce que les professionnels de la qualité ont besoin/souhaitent apprendre. Ensuite, nous nous reverrons en septembre. Merci!
