Well, it looks like my year as Section Chair is wrapping up. However, instead of preparing to say goodbye, I’m going to go one more year.
2022 has been a busy year filled with interesting virtual events, section communications, professional exchanges, and a long awaited in-person event. Your Section Leadership Team members get involved in all kinds of activities ranging from lining up events and speakers, making arrangements (both virtual and in-person), communicating via our newsletters, our websites, and our social platforms, supporting education for certifications and recertification, monitoring the status of our membership and how satisfied you are, balancing the budget and meeting our business plan, keeping records of our meetings and of our history, helping the team maintain and build its leadership members, involving students in the Quality community, and much more.
This is all volunteer work and we all have our other challenges to cope with as well, e.g. family obligations, work challenges, dealing with major changes in life, and health issues amongst a few of them. Notwithstanding, your Section Leadership Team delivered as best they could and I trust they will do so next year as well. Thank you for your support. Please reach out to us should you be interested in joining the team. We’re always on the lookout for new talent and ideas.
Eh bien, il semble que mon année en tant que président de la section se termine. Cependant, au lieu de me préparer à faire mes adieux, je vais continuer une année de plus.
L’année 2022 a été une année bien remplie, avec des événements virtuels intéressants, des communications de section, des échanges professionnels et un événement en personne tant attendu. Les membres de l’équipe de direction de votre section s’impliquent dans toutes sortes d’activités, qu’il s’agisse d’organiser des événements et des conférenciers, de faire les arrangements (virtuelles ou en personne), de communiquer via nos bulletins d’informations, nos sites Web et nos plateformes sociales, de soutenir la formation pour les certifications et les recertification, de surveiller le statut de nos membres et leur degré de satisfaction, d’équilibrer le budget et de respecter notre plan d’affaires, de tenir des registres de nos réunions et de notre histoire, d’aider l’équipe à maintenir et à renforcer ses membres dirigeants, d’impliquer les étudiants dans la communauté de la qualité, et bien plus encore.
Il s’agit d’un travail bénévole et nous avons tous d’autres défis à relever, par exemple des obligations familiales, des défis professionnels, des changements majeurs dans la vie et des problèmes de santé, pour n’en citer que quelques-uns. Malgré tout, l’équipe de direction de votre section a fait de son mieux et je suis convaincu qu’elle fera de même l’année prochaine. Je vous remercie de votre soutien. In this conference, our speaker will share a deep understanding of two LEAN approaches to support business transformation — Kaikaku and Kaizen Events. She will review general definitions around these terms and will explain the goal of each approach, the commonalities, the differences, and the benefits.
At the end of the conference, you will understand why “Kaikaku First and Kaizen Event Later” is a useful approach. Finally, she will share her formula to achieve a real Lean transformation in any business positively impacting Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost and People.
Our speaker: Albanesa Ymaya is from the Dominican Republic and is founder and CEO of Ymaya Lean Academy and FYLA (Ymaya Lean Academy Foundation). Albanesa has more than 19 years as an Industrial Engineer working with Lean Transformations in the Manufacturing sector, such as medical Devices and electronics. She holds a post-degree in Quality and Productivity Management and specializations in Project Management and Logistics Management, is a Certified as Lean Six Sigma Black Belt; Six Sigma Green Belt; Six Sigma Yellow Belt; ISO and TL 9000 Auditor; Kepner Tregoe Practical Problem Solving; and Maynard Operation Sequence Technique (MOST).
She is also trained in the Shingo Model and TPS. In her 19 years as a professor at different Institutes and Universities, Albanesa trained more than 6,000 people from different countries (Latin America, Caribbean, United State and Europe) and has been in Lean Manufacturing environments since she started her career as an industrial engineer. She lead different Lean transformations in different countries and managed project portfolios of more than $10 million and has been recognized for her work with different International Awards, such as “Lean Coach of the Year”; “Planet Lean of the Year”; and “Operations Excellence Award”. Lastly, she supports the Global Love and Kindness Project Foundation, founded by Karyn Ross, with the role of Caribbean Regional Director.

Had you attended our General Assembly this past October 26, 2022, you would have had the opportunity to finally congratulate the 2021 ASQ Canada Conference committee led by Chantale Simard. An ASQ Member Leader Excellence Award was given last year by our Regional Director, Puneet Manchada, for the committee’s work; however, because of the COVID pandemic, the actual physical award was only made available recently. We were finally able to do the group photo of the team with the award.
The team was composed of Sam Weissfelner, Veronica Marquez, Marcel A. Charbonneau, Eric Hosking, David Tozer, Chantale Simard, Jean-Pierre Amiel. Absent from the photo: Mauricio Figueroa, Ruth Stanley and Michel Guenette.
Congratulations to the team for all the hard work to make this bilingual event a success.
Si vous aviez assisté à notre Assemblée générale le 26 octobre 2022, vous auriez eu l’occasion de féliciter enfin le comité de la 2021 ASQ Canada Conference dirigé par Chantale Simard. Un prix d’excellence ASQ Member Leader a été donné par notre directeur régional, Puneet Manchada, l’année dernière pour le travail du comité; mais à cause de la pandémie de COVID, le prix physique n’a été rendu disponible que récemment. So far in this year, the Student Outreach Committee was able to organize two student seminar series which were both very successful.
As ASQ Student Outreach Committee Chair, I will continue organizing another seminar series for this year. We are in process of planning this for the second week of December. The information on registration, our speaker’s bio along with an abstract will be released soon.

On October 26th, we held our annual general assembly followed by a workshop on Multiple Management Systems. This event was held in-person, the first since February 2020. The closing survey was responded to by 19 members.
Our survey asked participants to rate the following on a 5 point scale (5 being the highest): Subject, Approach, Presenter, and Exchange. We report the statistics as “Top Box Scores” (percentage of 4s and 5s out of the number of responses) and Average Percentage.
The results from our October 26th event in order of Subject, Approach, Presenter, Exchange, and Global were very strong:
Top Box Score: 100.0%; 94.7%; 100.0%; 100.0%; 98.7%.
Average Percentage: 93.7%; 93.7%; 94.7%; 96.8%; 94.7%.
We also had some feedback regarding proposed subjects including: The new face of quality (young untrained professional becoming the quality management team), Technical workshops like statistics, Medical device regulations, Change management, Registrars, Managing management systems, Risk Management, GMP/GLP, Six sigma in manufacturing, Data analysis, DOE, Compliance, Data integrity, Continuous Improvement, and even Quality in making beer using solar power.
Also from the feedback, we gathered that quite a few were happy for the in-person aspect even though the room next door was a little loud and a few of us are still a little uncomfortable about being in-person. We also received suggestions regarding future awards.
Overall, excellent participation, satisfaction results and feedback. This event was indeed a joy to moderate. It felt good being “live” in front of people again. Thanks to my fellow Section Leadership Team members and our other members who attended and participated!
Le 26 octobre, nous avons tenu notre assemblée générale annuelle suivie d’un atelier sur les systèmes de gestion multiple. Cet événement s’est tenu en personne, le premier depuis février 2020. 19 membres ont répondu au sondage de fermeture.
Notre sondage demandait aux participants d’évaluer les éléments suivants sur une échelle de 5 points (5 étant le plus élevé): Sujet, Approche, Présentateur, et Échange. Nous présentons les statistiques sous forme de “Top Box Scores” (pourcentage de 4 et 5 par rapport au nombre de réponses) et de pourcentage moyen.
Les résultats de notre événement du 26 octobre selon le sujet, l’approche, le présentateur, l’échange et le globalement, ont été très bons:

Nous avons également reçu quelques réactions concernant des sujets proposés, notamment: le nouveau visage de la qualité (jeune professionnel sans formation qui devient l’équipe de gestion de la qualité), des ateliers techniques tels que les statistiques, les réglementations relatives aux dispositifs médicaux, la gestion du changement, les registraires la gestion des systèmes de gestion, la gestion des risques, les BPF/GLP, Six Sigma dans la fabrication, l’analyse des données, le DOE, la conformité, l’intégrité des données, l’amélioration continue, et même la qualité dans la fabrication de la bière en utilisant l’énergie solaire.
D’après les commentaires, nous avons constaté que beaucoup étaient satisfaits de l’aspect en personne, même si la salle d’à côté était un peu bruyante et que certains d’entre nous sont encore un peu mal à l’aise à l’idée d’être en personne. Nous avons également reçu des suggestions concernant les futurs prix.
Dans l’ensemble, la participation, les résultats de satisfaction et les réactions étaient excellents. Cet événement a été un véritable plaisir à animer. Cela m’a fait du bien d’être à nouveau “en direct” devant les gens. Merci à mes collègues de l’équipe de direction de la section et à nos autres membres qui ont assisté et participé!

Well, life happens! And sometimes in the most interesting ways.
At our recent General Assembly, Sam Weissfelner was struck by serendipity. Back in the days (around 1998), Sam wrote a chapter in collaboration for the publishing of the book Software Process Assessment & Improvement. It was published by Wiley and the IEEE Computer Society in 1999.
One day, after it’s publication, he dedicated a copy of the book for Denis Pronovost. The dedication reads “To a training professional whom I highly respect and an esteemed quality person!“
Recently the Montreal Section created the 2022 Prix Denis Pronovost in memory of Denis Pronovost who passed away in June 2015. At the General Assembly, participants were reminded of that the award was given to Patrick Barnes at the June 15th, 2022 webinar. They were also offered the opportunity to take quality-related books that Roger Pelletier (past chair of ASQ Section Québécoise) had donated from his private collection.
Now here is the real serendipity, lo and behold, amongst the donated books was the very same book that Sam had dedicated for Denis more than 23 years ago!!

We’re coming up soon to our Annual General Assembly which will be on October 26th. This is the time we share with our members the makeup of our Section Leadership Team (SLT) and some of our roles. This is also the time we try to encourage new members to join the SLT so as to support our team for the years to come. Several of our SLT members have been around for quite a few years and would appreciate passing on the torch for some of those roles. Shortly we’ll be sharing short videos of our roles and what being a SLT member has meant to us. I hope they encourage some of you to consider joining the team. I’ll now be the section’s Voice of the Customer (VoC) Chair for the rest of the year. In this article I’ll be reporting on two events: a regularly scheduled event held on September 28th with Kia Kahhali entitled “Pharmaceutical Data Integrity” and a special noon hour event held October 4th with Thomas Nagel entitled “Applying Six Sigma in a Coffee Shop”. Interestingly, closing surveys were responded to by 22 members for each event.
Our surveys ask participants to rate the following on a 5 point scale (5 being the highest): Subject, Approach, Presenter, and Exchange. We report the statistics as “Top Box Scores” (percentage of 4s and 5s out of the number of responses) and Average Percentage.
The results from our September 28th event in order of Subject, Approach, Presenter, Exchange, and Global were:
Top Box Score: 95.5% 90.9% 90.9% 81.8% 89.8%
Average Percentage: 92.7% 87.3% 88.2% 83.6% 88.0%

Overcoming Adversity: A Leap ForwardHybrid Conference, hosted by ASQ Vancouver
This year ASQ Vancouver Section 408 is hosting the 2022 ASQ Canada’s National Conference on Quality and Business Excellence on Saturday, November 19th, 2022. Now that we are emerging from the pandemic, the conference theme this year is: “Overcoming Adversity: A Leap Forward ”.
The Vancouver Section is so excited that the national conference would be a one-day interactive hybrid event for both physical and virtual attendees. Except for the first two morning sessions, all other sessions will be held in a hybrid format with speakers presenting in-person while participants attending in-person or virtually. As if all that is not enough, your participation in the conference will give you Recertification Units towards ASQ re-certification and can be applied to your PDUs with PMI and other professional institutions. Tickets for the conference will be available soon!
Cette année, la section 408 d’ASQ Vancouver accueille la conférence nationale 2022 d’ASQ Canada sur la qualité et l’excellence en affaires le samedi 19 novembre 2022. Maintenant que nous sortons de la pandémie, le thème de la conférence cette année est: “Surmonter l’adversité: Un bond en avant”.
La section de Vancouver est ravie que la conférence nationale soit un événement hybride interactif d’une journée pour les participants physiques et virtuels. À l’exception des deux premières séances du matin, toutes les autres séances se dérouleront dans un format hybride, les conférenciers faisant des présentations en personne et les participants assistant en personne ou virtuellement. Comme si tout cela ne suffisait pas, votre participation à la conférence vous donnera des unités de recertification pour le renouvellement de la certification ASQ et pourra être appliquée à vos PDU avec le PMI et d’autres institutions professionnelles. In this presentation on September 28th, 2022, Kia Kahhali, B. Eng. and founder of APS Compliance Consultants Inc (also known as “Access Pharma Solutions”), a private firm of experts assisting the Pharmaceutical and Food industries gave us insight and a plethora of information on how quality, compliance, validation, and regulatory are affecting the quality and integrity of the data in pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and allied industries.
Well once again, a look into the ever evolving world of data documentation of processes, but for me, a real update on the thoughts that go into the preparation and the life cycle of DATA. Let’s be truthful, it was actually “overwhelming” as our presenter tried to squeeze so much information into his 90 minutes presentation that it was like… Data overload 😁, pun intended.
Kia started off ensuring that the 33 participants present understood that there were two basic definitions of what data was, and that the Data Integrity Scope is much wider than just the analytical testing results, as it includes sampling, inspection and testing activities and any deviation and investigation through the process.
One of the most interesting aspects of his presentation was his comment that he was using standards written over 20 years ago and which have had few recent updates — not because there is nothing new in data principles — but rather because the principles remain “d’actualité“, they are still current. He also stated that data integrity controls should be based on the risks of losing that data. But the most challenging, and I have faced that one, is that the system used MUST allow the future reader/regulator/auditor to access and read the ORIGINAL data. Now there is a problem . . . as he suggested that only the original data stream be stored, not the interpreted or summarized versions, so that it may be reproduced. Is this a requirement for particular domains? This also infers that the ‘raw’ data must survive whatever technological evolution happens. And of course, this means that the methods used for validation and data transfer are also part of laboratory records and have to be included within the scope of the data integrity system.
As for the system requirements, there was the usual management support and involvement but also the need for employee training and the recording of that commitment, as the objective is to “ensure an engagement of the whole organization from the board room down to the laboratory bench and production floor“. As an aside to this item, ASQ has been requiring for the last four years that all your Section Leadership Team follow and pass an online course on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a European privacy and security system, which imposes obligations on organizations to protect various members’ personal information – a commitment.
Kia explained that for the data integrity approach, regulatory agencies have opted to issue Guidance documents rather than modifying the regulations so as to offer clarifications. He presented a Data Integrity Model for a pharmaceutical quality system that has three levels and explained that a Computerized Maintenance Management System, such as his company’s Alleye software, can best address the Level 1 – Equipment and systems and is working on another system for Level 2 – Analytical Methods and procedures. In his PDF handout, Kia provided a reference library of the various documents quoted.
Do you remember paper and pen? That was relatively easy to store, but it falls into the category of interpreting information. What about magnetic tape cassettes and reels, 8 inch, 5 1/4 inch and 3 1/2 inch diskettes, the computers and software to operate and drive these? I would have liked to have asked these clarifications, but there was so much more about the strategies and structures of the data integrity systems that we just barely made it in the allocated time. This may mean that another session on this subject is to be considered.

Ce 28 septembre 2022, Kia Kahhali, B. ing. et fondateur de APS Compliance Consultants Inc (également connu sous le nom de “Access Pharma Solutions”), une société privée d’experts qui assiste les industries pharmaceutiques et alimentaires, nous a donné un aperçu et une pléthore d’informations sur la qualité, la conformité, la validation et les réglementations qui affectent la qualité et l’intégrité des données dans les industries pharmaceutiques, biopharmaceutiques et apparentées.
Une fois de plus, nous avons jeté un coup d’œil dans le monde en pleine expansion de la documentation des processus de données, mais pour moi, il s’agissait d’une véritable mise à jour des réflexions sur la préparation et le cycle de vie du DATA (données). Soyons honnêtes, c’était vraiment “accablant” car notre présentateur a essayé de condenser tellement d’informations dans sa présentation de 90 minutes que c’était comme . . . une surcharge de données 😁, jeu de mots intentionnel.
Kia a commencé par s’assurer que les 33 participants présents comprenaient qu’il y avait deux définitions de base de ce que sont les données et que le champ d’application de l’intégrité des données est beaucoup plus large que les seuls résultats des tests analytiques, car il comprend l’échantillonnage, l’inspection et les activités de test, ainsi que tout écart et toute enquête au cours du processus.
L’un des aspects les plus intéressants de sa présentation a été son commentaire sur le fait qu’il utilise des normes écrites il y a plus de 20 ans et qui ont eu peu de mises à jour récentes – non pas parce qu’il n’y a rien de nouveau dans les principes relatifs aux données – mais plutôt parce que les principes restent “d’actualité“. Il a également déclaré que les contrôles de l’intégrité des données devraient être basés sur les risques de la perte de ces données. Mais le plus difficile, et j’y ai été confronté, est que le système utilisé DOIT permettre au futur lecteur/régulateur/auditeur d’accéder et de lire les données ORIGINALES. Il y a maintenant un problème . . . car il a suggéré que seul le flux de données original soit stocké, et non les versions interprétées ou résumées, afin qu’il puisse être reproduit. S’agit-il d’une exigence pour des domaines particuliers? Cela implique également que les données “brutes” doivent survivre à toute évolution technologique. Et bien sûr, cela signifie que les méthodes utilisées pour la validation et le transfert des données font également partie des archives du laboratoire et doivent être incluses dans le champ d’application du système d’intégrité des données.
En ce qui concerne les exigences du système, il y avait le soutien et l’implication habituels de la direction, mais aussi le besoin de formation des employés et l’enregistrement de cet engagement, car l’objectif est de “garantir un engagement de l’ensemble de l’organisation, de la salle du conseil jusqu’au banc de laboratoire et à l’atelier de production“. J’ouvre une parenthèse ici, l’ASQ exige depuis quatre ans que toute l’équipe de direction de votre section suive et réussisse un cours en ligne sur le Règlement général sur la protection des données (RGPD), un système européen de protection de la vie privée et de sécurité, qui impose aux organisations des obligations de protection des informations personnelles des différents membres – un engagement.
Kia a expliqué que pour l’approche d’intégrité des données, afin d’offrir des clarifications, les organismes de réglementation ont choisi de publier guides d’orientation plutôt que de modifier les normes. Il a présenté un modèle d’intégrité des données pour un système de qualité pharmaceutique à trois niveaux et a expliqué qu’un système de gestion de la maintenance informatisée, tel que le logiciel Alleye de sa société, peut mieux traiter le Niveau 1 – Équipements et systèmes et qu’il travaille sur un autre système pour le Niveau 2 – Méthodes et procédures analytiques. Kia a aussi fourni une bibliothèque de référence des différents documents cités dans sa présentation PDF.
Vous souvenez-vous du papier et du stylo? C’était relativement facile à conserver, mais cela entre dans la catégorie de l’interprétation de l’information. Qu’en est-il des cassettes et des bobines de bandes magnétiques, des disquettes de 8 pouces, 5-1/4 pouces et 3-1/2 pouces, des ordinateurs et des logiciels pour les faire fonctionner et les piloter? J’aurais aimé demander ces précisions, mais il y avait tellement de choses à dire sur les stratégies et les structures des systèmes d’intégrité des données que nous avons tout juste réussi à finir dans le temps imparti. Cela signifie peut-être qu’une autre session sur ce sujet est à envisager.
