Raymond Dyer 2020

Raymond DyerPar Raymond E. Dyer (Ray), ASQ Senior Member, CMQ/OE, & CQA (English text follows)

Merci!

This will be my last newsletter article as Section Chair. Two years do go by quickly. In 2024, you’ll see a new Section Chair that I promise will bring about interesting and pertinent change. Veronica Marquez is an intelligent and charismatic individual with a wonderful sense of collaboration, solid interpersonal skills, and an energetic strength of innovative ideas. Our members and Quality community will be well served under her leadership.

As for our Section Leadership Team, it recently conducted a SWOT (Strength – Weaknesses – Opportunities – Threats) session, led by Eric Hosking our Membership Chair, building on a previous SWOT session held and the feedback generated from a “What can ASQ Montreal Section do for you?” workshop that was held after our annual general assembly. Five themes surfaced from the exercise revolving around Communications, Events, Education/Training, Students, and Benchmarking. Various leads were assigned to collate the resources necessary from the team to make these themes advance. Already, certain actions have been taken. See if you can spot them in our LinkedIn group or, to a certain extent, this newsletter.

Thank you for participating in our Section activities in whatever way you can, be it attending virtual or in-person events, exchanging via our various social media channels (especially LinkedIn), joining the Section Leadership Team, etc. Your interest, participation, and feedback fuel the team in trying very hard to bring value to your ASQ membership. Thanks!

JP Amiel

By Jean-Pierre Amiel, ASQ Senior, CQA ret., Secrétaire (Texte en français suit)

What a change of pace for those present.

This past September 27th, 2023, Avrum Goldman shared with us a simple message on his life’s work to date which I would summarize as: Life is a tree with many branches where sometimes you get to choose which sprout to follow and sometimes you’re just ‘up a tree’ and you must deal with it.

It may not sound very philosophical, but what would you learn from someone who has spent 38 years in one company, has worked with or led teams in just about all the company’s product lines, as well as in different capacities and under various situations: flexibility, capability and continuous learning.

It all started after Avrum was hired for his first job just out of university. The day he showed up for work, his ‘new boss’ told him he didn’t have any work for him and then went door to door to see what he could find him to do. If that’s not an indication that you are headed for something different . . .  and so it went, as he described the evolution of his career and his discovery of the ‘quality’ field – brought about by his methodical approach to resolve situations and led by his background in Engineering – a complementary duality of interactions of the disciplines.

Avrum worked at Pratt & Whitney Canada in six major fields (blue) and held over 17 job functions/product lines (bubbles). Some were attributed, some for which he aimed and postulated for and even others that were handed to him because of his aptitudes at problem solving (right time-right place). He illustrated this evolution with a tall and leafy oak tree with red and blue arrows, illustrating the not-chosen and his chosen career paths.

He then shared a number of Case Studies to illustrate these various dualities:

  • The complementarity of the aerospace Quality system and Regulatory oversight – QMSP (Quality Management System Procedures) and the SMSP (Safety Management System Procedures);
  • Engineering compliance and Quality conformity;
  • Quality system project leadership (Dedicated team for new/change of state – Legacy team for stable operations);
  • Program sustainability and quality where the process requires support from different disciplines and responsibilities;
  • Human error and Human performance – understanding how the human at the controls expects the equipment to perform;
  • Human factors and Individual responsibility – Planned checklists and Assignable causes.

Finally, Avrum proposed his personal takeaways and recommendations:

  • Your capability: Don’t feel constrained by your current degree/credentials. You have a portfolio of skills and capabilities you can apply in the broadest and most creative way.
  • Your mandate: Don’t feel constrained to your current job description. Define your role to contribute to your organization’s greatest challenges.
  • Lifelong learning and teaching: You can always use more knowledge, invest in yourself! Seek out and leverage all sources of knowledge.
  • Multi-disciplinary approach: Engineering, Quality, Continuous Improvement, Airworthiness, Safety, Reliability, Leadership: All different aspects of the same process.
  • Value-stream approach: Technology development/Process development/Product development/Operations/Customer Support/MRO: All parts of the same process.

To quote Billy of The Family Circus: “The shortest distance between two points may be a straight line, but it’s the least interesting too.” (a cartoon character of the 60’s by Bil and Jeff Keane, Wikipedia)

Indeed an interesting ‘quality’ career.

  • La complémentarité du système de qualité aérospatial et de la surveillance réglementaire – QMSP (procédures du système de gestion de la qualité) et SMSP (procédures du système de gestion de la sécurité);
  • Conformité de l’ingénierie et conformité de la qualité;
  • La direction du projet de système de qualité (équipe spécialisée pour les nouveaux projets ou les changements d’état – équipe traditionnelle pour les opérations stables);
  • Durabilité et qualité du programme lorsque le processus nécessite le soutien de différentes disciplines et responsabilités;
  • Erreur humaine et performance humaine – comprendre comment l’homme aux commandes s’attend à ce que l’équipement fonctionne;

Michael Bournazian

By Michael Bournazian, Eng., Newsletter Editor, ASQ Senior Member, Quality Management Professional, CSSGB with Rolls-Royce

“Year-end” is a term we are all surely familiar with. Financially speaking, it refers to the end of the 12-month performance cycle of a company. For some businesses, year-end lines up with the calendar year, so starting January and ending in December; other businesses try to avoid having the end coincide with the holiday season, so it ends up being a different, continuous 12-month cycle.

As a Quality professional for the past 25+ years, one thing I have commonly heard in the weeks leading up to the close of year-end in all the companies I have worked for is “We need to ship as much as possible before year-end”. I was reminded of this a few weeks back in September, as my current employer’s fiscal reporting period is October to September.

At times in my career being closer to action, I had been made to feel like if I did not “do my part to get the parts shipped, it would not look good on me”. In other words, play along and look the other way if/when quality issues arise. Of course, doing so would mean you are merely delivering non-compliant product to your customer, but at least it will count towards the company year-end, right? Does this sound familiar? If not, give it some time (don’t worry, it won’t take long).

A new expression I also heard not long ago came from a supplier where I had conducted a virtual audit. The initial corrective action responses were supposed to be provided by September 29th, 2023. I received an e-mail from the Quality Manager 2 days before to ask for a one week extension to October 6th with no reason(s) given. When I asked why, his response back was (word-for-word) “Oh, you know, year-end”. I smiled on the outside as I read it, but not on the inside.

Money makes the world go around. Not sure who first said that, but I am sure they were a quality individual.

Raymond Dyer 2020

Raymond DyerBy Raymond E. Dyer (Ray), ASQ Senior Member, CMQ/OE, & CQA (Texte en français suit)

As it has been since ASQ changed their fiscal and operational year from July 1st to June 30th to one that aligned with the calendar year (i.e. January 1st to December 31st), ASQ Montreal Section has been holding its Annual General Assembly (AGA) near the end of October.

As we did last year, we plan to hold an in-person AGA again this year. Because of the size of the venue, we’ll have to limit registrations to 30 places and will need to insist on participants registering in advance so please do not just show up as we might not have enough space to welcome you. We’d also very much appreciate that you cancel your registration if you no longer intend to attend so that someone on the waiting list can register.

We’ll be following up the AGA with a networking workshop on “What can ASQ Montreal Section do for you?” using the World café process. We hope to leverage member, non-member, and student input on what our section can do to both satisfy existing members and interest new ones to join our section as well. We hope to see you there. Thank you.

Merci.
