ASQ Certification – Recertification
(La Certification-Récertification de l’ASQ)

Of all the multiple benefits that the American Society for Quality (ASQ) offers, its most important is certification, a formal recognition that an individual has demonstrated a proficiency within, and comprehension of, a specific body of knowledge. Five of these certification programs achieved ISO 17024 Personnel Certification Documentation Consultancy accreditation by ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB). Over 400,000 certifications have been issued to dedicated professionals worldwide.

On October 17, 2023, Dr David Tozer, our Section’s Education and Re-certification Chair was invited by the ASQ Canada Region to explain, in a simple straightforward approach, what 18 ASQ Certifications were available. He explained how ASQ’s Certification Pathways Tool could be used to identify which ASQ Certification was right for you and that another option was to seek advice from the local Section’s Education &/or Certification &/or Recertification Chairs.

Because applying and demonstrating proficiency for certification can be a little complicated, David then gave an overview of the basic requirements and preparation for the exams, the courses and the support that are available. He also went over the typical Experience requirements (Years / Decision Making) and hours of Preparation required for each type of certification.

To show the parallel with the various certifications, David then referenced the typical Career paths in which a quality professional might evolve in his career years, such as: Quality Planning; Risk Management; Fixing Issues; Continuous Improvement; Assessment; Training and reminding and Implementation and the certifications ASQ offers. In closing, he presented how recertification would be maintained: either by obtaining 18 recertification units (RUs) within a three-year recertification period or by retaking the certification exam at the end of that period.

He also suggested to participants that in order to gain an advantage over their competition, they should consider investing in their career by obtaining an ASQ certification. By the way, ASQ online exams and communication with a proctor will be conducted in English only.

PS: The Montreal section offers refresher courses on various ASQ Certifications. You can register for these courses, even if you are not an ASQ member. Company group rates available. Courses are offered from September through to June. Interested? Visit our Education Program page. History has shown refresher courses attendees have more than twice the certification success rate than those who don’t follow courses.

Parmi les multiples avantages qu’offre l’American Society for Quality (ASQ), le plus important est la certification, une reconnaissance formelle qu’un individu a démontré sa compétence et sa compréhension d’un ensemble spécifique de connaissances. Cinq de ses programmes de certification ont obtenu l’accréditation ISO 17024 Personnel Certification Documentation Consultancy par l’ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB). Plus de 400 000 certifications ont été délivrées à des professionnels dans le monde entier.

Le 17 octobre 2023, le Dr David Tozer, responsable de notre section pour l’éducation et le renouvellement de la certification, a été invité par la région canadienne de l’ASQ à expliquer, d’une manière simple et directe, quelles étaient les 18 certifications ASQ disponibles. Il a expliqué comment le Certification Pathways Tool (l’outil de cheminement vers la certification d’ASQ) pouvait être utilisé pour déterminer quelle certification ASQ vous convenait le mieux et qu’une autre option consistait à demander conseil aux responsable de la section locale chargés de la formation et/ou de la certification et/ou de la recertification.

Comme il peut être un peu compliqué de faire une demande de certification et de démontrer ses compétences, David a ensuite donné un aperçu des exigences de base et de la préparation aux examens, des cours et de l’aide disponible. Il a également passé en revue les exigences typiques en matière d’expérience (années / prise de décision) et les heures de préparation requises pour chaque type de certification.

Pour illustrer le parallèle avec les différentes certifications, David a ensuite fait référence aux parcours professionnels typiques dans lesquels un professionnel de la qualité peut évoluer au cours de sa carrière, tels que: la planification de la qualité, la gestion des risques, la résolution des problèmes, l’amélioration continue, l’évaluation, la formation, le rappel et la mise en œuvre, ainsi que les certifications proposées par l’ASQ. Pour conclure, il a ensuite présenté la manière dont la recertification serait maintenue: soit en obtenant 18 unités de recertification (UR) au cours d’une période de recertification de trois ans, soit en repassant l’examen de certification à la fin de cette période.

Il a également suggéré aux participants d’envisager d’investir dans leur carrière en obtenant une certification ASQ afin d’avoir un avantage sur leurs concurrents. Par ailleurs, les examens en ligne de l’ASQ et la communication avec un surveillant se dérouleront uniquement en anglais.

PS: La section de Montréal offre des cours de mise à jour sur diverses certifications ASQ. Vous pouvez vous inscrire à ces cours, même si vous n’êtes pas membre de l’ASQ. L’histoire a montré que les participants aux cours de remise à niveau ont un taux de réussite à la certification plus de deux fois supérieur à celui des personnes qui ne suivent pas de cours.

This month will see two events organized by ASQ Montreal Section in collaboration with two local universities.  

At École Polytechnique on November 9th, we will be co-hosting with the department of Mechanical Engineering, an event entitled “À l’intersection de l’ingénierie et la qualité” with Pierre Gaudet, Pratt and Whitney Canada Fellow of Quality, ASQ CQE and ASQ CSSBB as the featured speaker.

With students from the Operations Management program at UQAM, we are organizing a panel event that will be held on November 29th.  It will feature 4 or more speakers from different business sectors and from different roles within those sectors. The panel will be moderated by our own Veronica Marquez who will be challenging the panel with questions about their careers and responsibilities in the Quality domain. The panel is being finalized at the time of writing.

Both events will serve to create awareness of the important role that Quality plays in the Engineering and Operations environments.

NOTE: These events are limited to the respective student populations at the requests of the Universities.

Ce mois-ci verra deux événements organisés par la section ASQ Montréal en collaboration avec deux universités locales.

À l’École Polytechnique le 9 novembre prochain, nous co-animerons avec le département de génie mécanique, un événement intitulé “À l’intersection de l’ingénierie et la qualité” avec Pierre Gaudet, Pratt et Whitney Canada Fellow of Quality, ASQ CQE et ASQ CSSBB en tant que conférencier invité.

Avec les étudiants du programme Gestion des opérations de l’UQAM, nous organisons un panel qui aura lieu le 29 novembre. Il mettra en vedette 4 conférenciers ou plus issus de différents secteurs d’activité et occupant différents rôles au sein de ces secteurs. Le panel sera modéré par notre propre Veronica Marquez qui posera au panel des questions sur leur carrière et leurs responsabilités dans le domaine de la qualité. Le panel est en cours de finalisation au moment de la rédaction.

Les deux événements serviront à faire prendre conscience du rôle important que joue la qualité dans les environnements d’ingénierie et d’opérations.

REMARQUE: Ces événements sont limités aux populations étudiantes respectives à la demande des universités.

In my corner last month, I spoke about “Year-end” . . . in financial terms. This month, it’s a different year-end.

As usual, November brings to an end our Section’s event activities, as well as Newsletter activities until January of the following year.

So I would like to take this opportunity, as I have in previous November issues of this Newsletter, to wish everyone a joyous holiday season. However you celebrate, I hope it is filled with peace and love.

Le 17 octobre dernier,  Dr David Tozer notre responsable de l’éducation et de la re-certification a présenté une conférence portant sur “La Certification-Recertification ASQ“.

L’activité se déroulait sur 1 heure et permettait de répondre aux questions concernant les 18 certifications de l’ASQ.  Parmi les 14 participants qui ont complété le sondage, ceux ci ont démontré un taux global de satisfaction de plus de 96%. Le thème, ainsi que le présentateur, ont été également très apprécié avec un taux de 95%. Parmi les participants plusieurs secteurs d’affaires étaient représentés tel que la fabrication, la consultation et le domaine pharmaceutique. Par ailleurs, cette présentation a attiré une audience provenant de la Grande région Métropolitaine, ainsi que d’autres villes Canadiennes.

Ensuite, le 25 octobre, votre section a tenue son “Assemblée générale“, suivi d’un atelier de travail de style “Café du monde” sur le thème de “Qu’est-ce que la Section de Montréal peut faire pour vous?” L’activité s’est déroulé au restaurant 3 Soeurs. Parmi les 10 participants qui ont complété le sondage, ceux ci ont démontré un taux global de 100% pour le Sujet, l’Approche, le Présentateur et l’Échange.

On October 17th, Dr. David Tozer, our Head of Education and Re-certification, gave a presentation on “ASQ Certification-Recertification“.

The activity took place over 1 hour and allowed us to answer questions about the 18 ASQ certifications.  Among the 14 participants who completed the survey, they demonstrated an overall satisfaction rate of more than 96%. The theme, as well as the presenter, were also very much appreciated with a rate of 95%. Among the participants, several business sectors were represented, such as manufacturing, consulting and the pharmaceutical field. In addition, this presentation attracted an audience from the Greater Metropolitan Area, as well as other Canadian cities.

Then, on October 25th, your Section held it’s “General Assembly“, followed by a “World Café” style workshop on the theme “What can ASQ Montreal Section do for you?” The activity took place at the 3 Soeurs restaurant. Of the 10 participants who completed the survey, they demonstrated an overall rate of 100% for Subject, Approach, Presenter and Exchange.

Il s’agit de mon dernier article de bulletin en tant que président de section. Deux années passent vite. En 2024, vous verrez une nouvelle présidente de section qui, je le promets, apportera des changements intéressants et pertinents. Veronica Marquez est une personne intelligente et charismatique, dotée d’un merveilleux sens de la collaboration, de solides compétences interpersonnelles et d’une force énergique d’idées novatrices. Nos membres et la communauté de la qualité seront bien servis sous sa direction.

Quant à l’équipe de direction de notre section, elle a récemment mené une session SWOT (Forces – Faiblesses – Opportunités – Menaces), dirigée par Eric Hosking, notre responsable des membres, en s’appuyant sur une session SWOT précédente et sur les commentaires générés par un atelier “Que peut faire la section ASQ de Montréal pour vous?” qui a eu lieu après notre assemblée générale annuelle. Cinq thèmes sont ressortis de l’exercice, soit les communications, les événements, l’éducation et la formation, les étudiants et l’analyse comparative. Différents responsables ont été chargés de rassembler les ressources nécessaires de l’équipe pour faire avancer ces thèmes. Certaines actions ont déjà été entreprises. Voyez si vous pouvez les repérer dans notre groupe LinkedIn ou, dans une certaine mesure, dans cette infolettre.

Merci de participer aux activités de notre section de toutes les manières possibles, que ce soit en assistant à des événements virtuels ou en personne, en échangeant via nos différents canaux de médias sociaux (en particulier LinkedIn), en rejoignant l’équipe de direction de la section, etc. Votre intérêt, votre participation et vos commentaires alimentent l’équipe qui s’efforce d’apporter de la valeur à votre adhésion à l’ASQ. This will be my last newsletter article as Section Chair. Two years do go by quickly. In 2024, you’ll see a new Section Chair that I promise will bring about interesting and pertinent change. Veronica Marquez is an intelligent and charismatic individual with a wonderful sense of collaboration, solid interpersonal skills, and an energetic strength of innovative ideas. Our members and Quality community will be well served under her leadership.

As for our Section Leadership Team, it recently conducted a SWOT (Strength – Weaknesses – Opportunities – Threats) session, led by Eric Hosking our Membership Chair, building on a previous SWOT session held and the feedback generated from a “What can ASQ Montreal Section do for you?” workshop that was held after our annual general assembly. Five themes surfaced from the exercise revolving around Communications, Events, Education/Training, Students, and Benchmarking. Various leads were assigned to collate the resources necessary from the team to make these themes advance. Already, certain actions have been taken. See if you can spot them in our LinkedIn group or, to a certain extent, this newsletter.

Thank you for participating in our Section activities in whatever way you can, be it attending virtual or in-person events, exchanging via our various social media channels (especially LinkedIn), joining the Section Leadership Team, etc. Your interest, participation, and feedback fuel the team in trying very hard to bring value to your ASQ membership. ASQ Certification often leads to higher paying employment. The money invested in education and certification increases chances of finding employment quickly in the down sizing environment we live in.  People who take the section sponsored refresher courses, and spend at least twice as much time as spent in the classroom on self study, have an 80%, or better, chance of passing the examination on the first attempt.
