The Editor’s Corner | Mot de l’éditeur

Michael Bournazian

By Michael Bournazian, Eng., Newsletter Editor, ASQ Senior Member, Quality Management Professional, CSSGB with Rolls-Royce

Like all occasions that end with a “0” or a “5”, this coming October 22nd will be no different, as we will be celebrating the 75th anniversary of the ASQ Montreal section. Hope to see as many members as possible coming out to celebrate this monumental occasion.

Perhaps not as monumental, but still significant for myself, this month marks exactly 15 years of me being on the ASQ Montreal Section Leadership Team, as well as 15 years of being the Newsletter Editor.

Fifteen years ago when current Section Chair and then Newsletter Editor Chantale Simard asked me if I would be interested in the role, I was uncertain at first and procrastinated in making a decision. In the end, I took a chance and said YES. That decision to say YES has given me great professional and life experiences, too many to mention here, and I continue in my role because I continue to enjoy doing it.

I do foresee a day when I may have to step aside, but not quite yet. Their is still gas in the tank, as they say.

So thank you to everyone who helps (or has helped) make this newsletter possible 9 times per year. And thank you especially to everyone who reads it. It is much appreciated.

**********************************************

Any feedback? Click on the link and let me know.

ALSO . . .  Please contact me or any one else on the Leadership team if you would like to:
1) Write and submit an article to be published in the Newsletter.
2) Write a review of one of the upcoming monthly webinars for the “Had You Been There” section.

Thank you, all the best and none of the worst.

On the evening of June 18, 2025, the Montreal section of ASQ held its meeting under the theme “Perspectives on Quality”, featuring a distinguished group of professionals from key sectors of Quebec’s economy: automotive, defense, pharmaceutical and agri-food.

Under the thoughtful guidance of Samira Kazemi and Chantale Simard, participants were invited to explore three major themes, one of which focused on artificial intelligence (AI) – a topic that sparked genuine enthusiasm.

With his usual energy, Sam Weissfelner led the group presentations, consistently highlighting the opportunities and challenges that AI presents for our professions.

Chantale Simard shared with the group how AI has helped lighten her daily workload by automating repetitive tasks, allowing her to refocus on those with higher added value.

Dr. David Tozer, always clear and educational, emphasized the limitations of AI models based on probability and the risks associated with data quality, which can lead to recurring errors.

Veronica Marquez, drawing on her organizational expertise, highlighted the extraordinary potential of these tools, while also pointing out the challenges related to data protection and the reliability of AI-generated results. She also stressed the need for clear AI governance, given its rapidly growing use in businesses.

What struck me most? How present AI already is in our practices, the extraordinary potential of these tools, and the speed at which they are evolving.

It was a meaningful event for Quebec’s quality community, one I hope to see repeated more often!

ASQ Montreal – 75 Years of History — The Boxes 2 | Les boites 2

75 Years of History — The Boxes, Take 2 | Les boites, prise 2

Sam Weissfellner & Jean-Pierre Amiel

Sam Weissfelner, ASQ Senior, ASQ CSQE, CQA, Nominations Committee Chair and Historian, with
Jean-Pierre Amiel, ASQ Senior, ASQ CQA, Past Historian

Out of the Boxes: Take 2 . . .

This scrapbook is dedicated as a historical record of the activities of the Montreal Section of the American Society for Quality Control for the year 1957/1958 . . . To all those who view its pages, may it bespeak the labours of those who have toiled in search of success for the Montreal Section.”

R. Vance Ward, Montreal Section Chairman 1957/58.

And so did our quality historian ancestors begin their collections . . .  With the upcoming 75th Anniversary rapidly approaching, your section’s historical team revisited some of these archive boxes. Sam discovered that previous historians had created a number of photo albums (for younger readers, these are paper books in which photos taken with a camera are pasted). Sam browsed through some of the albums, took photos (with his phone) to share more past memories and sent them by email to Jean-Pierre so he could share them with you (a quick wink to the technological jumps since the Section began).

These albums will be displayed at our planned 75th Anniversary event on October 22, 2025 at the Hotel Novotel, Montreal Aeroport. Reserve that date!!

Here are some of these moments.

ASQ Montreal Section Scrapbooks 1957-2010

🔅 🔅

The heart of our section – its members and their leaders in their engagement to “create, promote, and stimulate interest in the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of the science of quality control and of its application to industrial processes.” And, to this end, over the years, we held many events, presentations and documents to communicate the knowledge of this new “science”. Many of these were recorded over three-quarters of a century in scrapbooks, shorts and on the Internet.

🔅 🔅

Some highlights from the early days include our first conference in October 1957, the creation of the Ottawa branch that same year, and the launch of a branch in the Maritimes. Claude I. Taylor, president of Trans Canada Airlines (the predecessor of Air Canada), was elected president of the Montreal chapter in 1958. In the 1970s, the creation of the ASQ’s French-speaking chapter was on everyone’s mind and would become an inspiration for the Mouvement Québecois de la Qualité. From the very beginning and over the years, training in the quality sciences was promoted through professors and programs at the École Polytechnique, the COSE (Centre d’organisation scientifique de l’entreprise), Vanier CEGEP, Concordia University, the École de technologie supérieure or by coaching provided by section members. In 2000, the Montreal Section inaugurated its first website. A new era begins.

And what will you bring to your section over the next couple of years?

See you soon . . .

Cesar Camargo 2023

Cesar Camargo 2023By Cesar Camargo, Responsable VoC, (English text follows)

Cesar Camargo

I am grateful to my father for instilling in me a love for books. Thanks to him, I turned reading into both a habit and a pleasure. One of the many books he gave me when I was a teenager was The Eyes of the Siberian Dog by the Argentine author Antonio Santa Ana. From this book, I would like to share the following excerpt:
“ . . . at that time I got into the habit of writing down in a notebook the phrases from books that I liked. One of them said: “To listen, one must be silent.” I don’t know why I liked it so much. Even today, as I still keep that notebook, I can read it with my shaky handwriting from back then.” (Santa Ana, 1998).

This phrase, which the novel’s protagonist wrote in his notebook, also struck me, and I feel it is more relevant than ever. Listening is the key to making others feel important. Active listening allows us to understand the needs, dreams, and desires of others. Listening is the foundation to then act accordingly and meet the needs of our customers.

At ASQ Montreal Section, we listen to our members and gather their positive and negative feedback, as well as their recommendations for topics for future events.

Looking back at the first semester of 2025, the events we held were rated with an average of 95% overall satisfaction, the speakers and topics with 96%, the approach with 95%, and the interaction during the event with 93% positive perception. For the section leadership team, it is rewarding to see that our members participating in the events are perceiving value in these activities.

The invitation remains open: let’s continue to stay engaged and enjoy being part of this community that is passionate about quality. Until next time!

Cesar Camargo

On September 25th at Concordia University, we are having a discussion panel called “The Many Faces of Quality”. We need volunteers (senior ASQ members) to participate, from 10am to noon – please send me an email if interested (details below, no. 4). On October 30th, Pierre Marquis will meet with industrial engineering students at CEGEP Ahuntsic as part of the “Standardization and Quality Management” course. This event was successfully held in the fall of 2024.

Other presentations are planned for this Fall or Winter 2026 at HEC, Concordia, and UQAM.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite the entire student community and professors to contact me to meet at your university/CEGEP and discuss “Quality” with my colleagues Raymond Dyer, Eric Hosking and Sam Weissfelner, who have accompanied me in the past. A choice of four themes is proposed:

1 – The intersection of engineering and quality (or management and quality): To illustrate the key role of engineers/managers in the quality footprint of manufactured products.

2 – Future Quality Talent: A panel of three or four professionals share their vision of the future of the quality profession.

3 – Six Sigma Panel: A panel of industry experts in the implementation of Six Sigma programs and the use of Six Sigma tools present a brief overview of their experience with Six Sigma.

4 – The Many Faces of Quality: Quality professionals from a wide range of industries and disciplines talk about their beginnings, their professional development, and their activities in the field of quality, accompanied by anecdotes.

Please note that any other specific requests will also be considered, in addition to these four choices. Simply send me an email at pierre.marquis1@gmail.com with the details.

Thank you for your attention!
