Word from the Chair

By Chantale Simard, MBA, Quality Assurance Analyst, Bombardier Aviation, ASQ CMQOE and CSSGB

This month, I would like to share with you a summary of our Business Plan for 2021. First, all objectives of Geographic Community (GC) level entities such as the Montreal Section and the Canada and Greenland Region must be aligned with the ASQ Strategic objectives. Those are:

  • Improve the individual member experience
  • Institute best practices in governance, operations, and risk management
  • Drive thought leadership in excellence through quality
  • Deliver new, tailored solutions to organizational members and customers.

Your section business plan includes metrics and targets. Here is a list of our main targets for this year:

  • Support the Canada Conference 2021 in October: This one just changed to Hosting the Canada Conference 2021. You may remember my February article where I told you about our main objectives for this big event!
  • Host one of the 9 Regional Webinars
  • Host 8 Montreal events and 2 Student events
  • Publish 8 newsletters per year
  • Increase in myASQ activity over 2020 with a focus on new joins and downloads.
  • Minimum 3 French-language events in the Montreal area and minimum one of the events of the Student Outreach committee in French.
  • Find new ways for promotion of ASQ certifications and make investments

If you want to volunteer on the Section Leadership Team (SLT), we always need extra help. You need to be a “Full”, “Senior” or “Fellow” member to join. We hold a meeting at the beginning of every month (except during the summer). Our meetings are all virtual for the moment. But, even when we were holding face to face meetings, we started using technology to accommodate SLT members to join electronically. This makes it easier for members outside the Montreal area or people with different or busy schedules to get involve. Some of us are giving a lot of time to the Section and others have less time to invest and it is really good; all help is welcome.

All volunteers are adding value to Section members and help attain our mission: To promote and enhance the quality profession by providing support to our Section membership, offering information, educational programs and events, and promoting the awareness and value of  quality in the community.

Contact me if you would like to help the Montreal Section by taking up a role on the SLT.

2021 ASQ Canadian Conference

2021 ASQ Canadian Conference

The Montreal Section will be hosting the 2021 ASQ Canadian Conference, which will probably take place in October, traditionally Quality Month, but in virtual mode. A planning team has started work and has identified many ideas. The working theme for the Conference is Risk and Resilience and it would be illustrated by various conferences and workshops with hands-on experiences, each rated by “knowledge levels”. We have already identified three objectives close to our hearts:

  • An interactive experience;
  • Activities categorized by level of knowledge of the subject;
  • A bilingual conference.

Stay tuned for further developments.

Envoyez-moi vos commentaires

I am honored to announce that the Montreal Section will host the 2021 ASQ Canadian Conference, which will take place virtually later this year. We have already identified 3 objectives that are close to our hearts: An interactive experience, activities categorized by level of knowledge of the subject and a bilingual conference.

We will provide you with options for workshops and activities that will promote exchange and discussion and allow participants to learn through small group workshops, software or simulation available online during the activity.

We will offer learning opportunities according to the required level of knowledge of the topics covered (beginner, intermediate and advanced). We hope this will help you choose the activities and conferences that will meet your expectations.

Finally, we intend to take advantage of the fact that we are a bilingual section to ensure that this conference will offer activities in both official languages, as well as simultaneous translations.

We are interested in your comments and suggestions. We will be launching an online survey in connection with this conference shortly. I will tell you about it and will give the link in the next edition of the newsletter. In the meantime, feel free to write to me or start a discussion on our LinkedIn group or on our French or English MyASQ sites.

Thanks to the members of the ASQ Canada region for your trust and support!

Veronica Marquez

By Veronica Marquez, MSc, ASQ Senior Member, ASQ CSSBB, Section Vice-chair and Social media chair

Last year’s efforts to continue to offer our members with continued conferences and events, required that we adopt new technologies and work processes. This year, we are continuing in that path and have begun changing a few things with the goal of bringing greater visibility and recognition to our section and to all quality professionals.

  • Our website was revamped and rejuvenated thanks to J.P. Amiel’s efforts and hard work,
  • Our newsletter format was also rejuvenated and aligned with the new website. For you, our readers, it should make it easier to read the articles that interest you. For us, it has drastically improved our process and time to publish,
  • ASQ’s myASQ site is also kept up to date in English and in French. We are the only section to have two distinct sites, so please make sure to follow us there,
  • We are also using LinkedIn to share our events and information of our section with both professionals and students. We highly encourage you to use these sites to post quality related articles and news, discussions and job opportunities,
  • For those that believe that 280 characters is enough to share an idea, our Twitter account will also be getting a bit more attention, and
  • As of this month, our event registrations will be done through Eventbrite where you can find us under “ASQ Montréal”. Make sure to follow us so that you see our upcoming events and please share our events with your network.

If you have any questions or comments about our new approaches, please reach out here!

Student Outreach Committee – 2020 Eric Stern Award

Farnoosh NaderkhaniBy Dr. Farnoosh Naderkhani, ASQ Member, Assistant Professor @ Concordia, Student Outreach Committee Chair

Without a doubt, the COVID-19 pandemic has abruptly changed the world as we knew it, at the beginning of the 2nd decade of the 21st century. The past nine months have been significantly challenging, startling, and disillusioning, in particular for students who are among those hardest hit as they were suddenly forced to live and learn remotely. On the bright side, we all have learned to continue learning, working, and socializing in a virtual environment. I wish all students a healthy, productive and prosperous 2021.

It is my great pleasure to announce that Mr. Kamyar Azar is the recipient of the ASQ Montreal Section’s 2020 Eric Stern Award. Mr. Azar is currently a full time Masters student, studying Quality System Engineering at the Concordia Institute for Information System Engineering (CIISE), Concordia University.

Kamyar Azar - 2020 Eric Stern Award

In summary, the intellectual merit of his work is in the development of advanced Machine Learning-based models (ML), coupled with Quality Control techniques to perform high accuracy predictions in the Healthcare industry. Nowadays, significant technological advancements have resulted in the availability of large multi-modal, complex and high-dimensional datasets within the Healthcare domain.

Due to the complexity of such datasets, using dimension reduction techniques is more important than ever before to increase the training speed and to provide better interpretations. In this regard, a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) control chart, a well-known quality control technique for data dimensionality reduction, is applied to analyze the Breast Cancer Wisconsin (Diagnostic) imaging dataset. Finally, multiple classification models are “trained” to predict a tumor’s malignancy. In addition to significant theoretical and technological implications of such projects, like Healthcare being a key driver of Canada’s economy, advancements in this line of research can have a significant impact on our Healthcare industry.

Congratulations Kamyar for your work. Great job.

Word from the Chair – Mot de la présidente

By Chantale Simard, MBA, Quality Assurance Analyst, Bombardier Aviation, ASQ CMQOE and CSSGB

Do you hold one or more ASQ certifications? Do you have the impression that our certifications are not recognized enough in Quebec and that employers do not differentiate from other certifications that are much easier to obtain? If this appeals to you, we need your help.

In fact, our section has given itself the mandate to promote ASQ certifications to employers and quality professionals in Quebec. I present to you, below, some avenues that we will explore this year.

First, we’ll maximize the use of our LinkedIn group with discussions on the value of certifications. We will also focus on mutual assistance between members in preparing for exams. Here is the link for our LinkedIn group.

Second, we will continue to represent ASQ at major events and we would like to be present at more of them. Are you aware of an event of interest? Let us know! You are interested in representing the section, let us know as well. Yes, it is possible to do so, even at virtual events!

Third, participate and invite your colleagues to our events, which will of course be virtual at the start of the year. To increase the visibility of our events, we’ll be using Eventbrite. The more known ASQ is, the better our certifications will be!

Fourth, as you probably already know, the Montreal section has been the only section in Quebec for a year now. We are in the process of modifying all of our platforms to make everything as bilingual as possible. Please visit our modernized website.

Finally, we are open to all other ideas. Contact me let me know about yours and thank you in advance for your help!

Happy healthy new year 2021!

Student Outreach Committee – 2020 Eric Stern Award

Farnoosh NaderkhaniBy Dr. Farnoosh Naderkhani – ASQ Member, Assistant Professor @ Concordia, Student Outreach Committee Chair.

In memory of Eric Stern – a respectfully remembered ASQ Montreal Section Leader and Concordia Alumni, the “Eric Stern Award” is granted to Master students at Concordia. The 2020 Eric Stern Award competition is organized by the Student Outreach Committee of the ASQ Montreal Section, together with the rest of the Leadership Team at ASQ Montreal, and Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science. The Eric Stern Award competition is open to full time Master of Science (MASc) or Master of Engineering (MEng) students registered at Concordia Institute for Information System Engineering (CIISE) or Industrial Engineering from Mechanical, Aerospace and Industrial Engineering (MAIE) at Concordia University.

Interested students are invited to participate in this competition with a $500 CAD award to win. The focus of this competition is on individually defined quality related projects on topics such as inspection, defect detection, and quality control, to name but a few. We hope the students see the exercise as a rewarding learning exercise and small financial incentive to compete and win, as well as learn more and appreciate a fellow alumnus that made his mark with several societies, not just ASQ and Concordia.

The deadline to submit projects (report of maximum 5 pages) is now December 5, 2020. The reports should be emailed to Dr. Farnoosh Naderkhani. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dr. Naderkhani.

See the 2020 Eric Stern Award for more details.
