Livrer de la valeur à nos membres
Delivering Value to Our Members

Veronica Marquez Par Veronica B. Marquez, M.Sc., ASQ Senior Member, CSSBB  (English text follows)

  • Mettre l’accent sur la valeur apportée à nos membres ;
  • Continuer d’amplifier nos efforts de sensibilisation ;

Last January, I wrote about our goals for 2024. Remember?

I shared three of them with you:

  • Focus on the value we bring to our members;
  • Continue to amplify our awareness-raising efforts;
  • Review and improve our communication tools and techniques.

I invite you to send me your event ideas for fall 2024, and share your comments and suggestions that could help us deliver a rewarding member experience that lives up to your expectations.

In parallel with these objectives, we also tested a tool to streamline our event registration process. This test proved not to meet our criteria, so we decided to return to Eventbrite to share our events and manage registrations. We will, of course, continue to share everything on our various pages ASQ Montreal, MyASQ and LinkedIn .

I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events on May 29 and June 12.

Hasta pronto!

Veronica,

Samira Kazemi 2024

(AI, Humans and the Production Chain)

JP AmielJean-Pierre Amiel, Responsable web, ASQ CQA

Samira.

Another interesting evening offered by ASQ Montreal on April 24, 2024, when Jean Massardi, PhD, head of AI research at Neuligent. He has more than 10 years of experience in AI and in supporting SMEs in the realization of AI integration projects. He spoke to us about the hot topic of the moment – Artificial Intelligence (AI). At least so we thought, until he explained that it’s been around for over 70 years and that there have already been several periods of evolution, the most recent of which began in 2012 with Deep Blue.🤔 For me, the major themes to take away from this presentation are:

  • There is as yet no universal definition of AI, but it can be summed up in three concepts: judgment, reasoning and understanding.
  • The interface is best known these days for its illusion of comprehension – in reality more of a sentence completion application, where the AI has been trained to quickly anticipate the next word in a sentence from a huge bank of words (data) and probabilities as to the logic of it correctly completing the emitted thought. There are several companies with applications, the best known being Chat GPT, Mistral AI and Copilot.
  • A neural network can be mathematically translated into Artificial Intelligence. Based on four case studies, Jean went on to explain the risks associated with information sharing, the system’s great strength in optimization analysis, and the support it can provide in commercial and industrial applications. AI is very strong in the application of tools – accelerating evaluation, sorting and replacement tasks.
  • In implementation projects, the bulk of the work is in setting up the system. This process is similar to other projects, but it’s the maintenance phase that requires the most effort.
  • He realizes that, in the production chain, AI can be seen either as a tool to help carry out tasks, or as an autonomous agent that performs tasks. Which has naturally led to discussions about replacing humans in certain tasks. In his view, the tasks most at risk are service jobs, where data and information processing can be handled more quickly by AI’s artificial neurons. Also, according to him, AI would have great difficulty playing Monopoly©, as negotiating agreements with other players is not its “forte“.

Wow! A lot of information.

📌Veronica B. Marquez , our section chair, also had the opportunity to interview Jean Massardi. You are invited to see her Pod Cast Excellence 5.0 – L’IA au Service de l’Excellence : Décryptage en Profondeur. As for the future, Jean’s specialty is AI system implementation, so Veronica offered to bring him back to discuss this.

To those who missed this event, I hope to see and connect with you next time. Samira.

JP Amiel

(Evolution of ISO 10012 Measurement management system)

On April 3, 2024, it was with great pleasure that our Section Vice-chair, Raymond Dyer, welcomed Christophe Dubois (in France) and Yoann Donat (in Granby, Quebec) of Deltamu.

Christophe Dubois specializes in training and support for manufacturers, and is passionate about the possibilities of correctly performed metrology, and curious about the evolution of measurement science in the Industry of the Future. He is an active member of the CFM (Collège Français de Métrologie) and, above all, of the AFNOR X07b METROLOGIE commission, where he is a representative on the WG27 ISO working group on the revision of ISO 10012. The committee sent its final version to all members for validation.

ISO 10012 Chapters PDCA 2024Yoann Donat drew us a brief portrait of Deltamu, created over twenty years ago and established in Quebec since 2022.

By way of introduction, Christophe then shared with us his observations based on 15 years’ experience as a consultant in the field of industrial testing: Although measurement is a real industrial need, operational metrology is often restricted to instrument management, and the measurement process is not always mastered. It turns out that we spend more time designing a product and almost nothing on validating tolerances that are non-functional, ill-defined and too restricted to compensate for non-conformities. As a result, you don’t really see the problems, because the measurements are inadequate, and you over-qualify; uncertainties, a fundamental notion in measurement, are not taken into account.

Christophe then outlined the differences and complementarities between ISO/IEC 17025 Calibration and testing laboratories and ISO 10012:2003 Measurement management systems. The former enables laboratories to demonstrate their competence and ability to produce valid results (the how), thus reinforcing the confidence placed in them nationally and worldwide, while the latter is intended to provide generic requirements and application guides for the management of measurement processes and for the confirmation of measurement equipment used to demonstrate conformity to metrological requirements (the why).

The main activities of the ISO 10012 revision working group were to modernize the standard, make it “auditable” and organize its structure according to the Harmonized Structure (HS) typical of other ISO standards, based on a common corpus of terms and definitions. He then took us on a tour of the various content chapters to explain why and what the standard will enable companies to achieve.

Whew! One hour wasn’t enough. Raymond suggested that we bring Christophe back for a longer presentation on this subject, certainly after January 2025, when the standard is due to be published.

To those who missed this event, I hope to see and connect with you next time.

On Wednesday, March 20, 2024, a small group of professionals (ten ASQ members and three interested parties) attended an in-person tour of the Digifab QG premises in Longueuil. We saw various technologies on display, watched robots in action, and shared a great moment of learning in excellent company!

What really struck me was how Digifab provided real opportunities for companies to familiarize themselves with a wide range of technologies, and to experiment with solutions before making a commitment and investing. Thanks to the technologies available at the center and their monitoring of the progress of these technologies, Digifab try to ensure they help customers find the best suppliers to meet their business needs.

Digifab’s digital transformation experts come from various manufacturing backgrounds, and are very well positioned to support customers, often small or medium sized enterprises, strategically at every stage of their transformation. It was amazing to see some of the technological options that could be explored and hear about some use cases.

It was an exciting learning opportunity and almost made me wish I could be one of these companies improving from Digifab’s insight and expertise. Thank you Rémi Taurines, Luka Pérusse and Catherine Laganiere for your warm welcome.

If you are reading this, then the solar eclipse of April 8, 2024 is now in the history books. If you took the opportunity to witness it live, good for you. And even if you did not, given social media, there are a million and three options to witness it after the fact.

One thing I actually learned because of the solar eclipse is that . . . low and behold, there’s a ISO standard for that!

The ISO 12312-2:2015 standard, entitled “Eye and face protection – Sunglasses and related eyewear – Part 2: Filters for direct observation of the Sun“, is the standard to which protective eyewear must be certified to in order to properly and safely view the sun.

According to the Solar Eclipse Across America website: “ISO 12312-2 sets requirements on the following properties of a safe solar viewer:

  • Transmittance (the ratio of transmitted light to incident light) at the ultraviolet, visible, and infrared wavelengths that reach our retinas;
  • Uniformity of transmittance;
  • Material and surface quality;
  • Mounting;
  • Labeling.”

Often in our Quality lives, we work with “common” ISO standards like ISO 9001, AS9100, ISO45001, etc. However, the International Organization of Standardization has published (as of January 2024) over 25,000 international standards covering almost all aspects of technology and manufacturing.

And in case you were wondering, there are 2 other ISO 12312 standards:

  • ISO 12312-1: 2022 > Eye and face protection – Sunglasses and related eyewear – Part 1: Sunglasses for general use; and
  • ISO 12312-3:2022 > Eye and face protection – Sunglasses and related eyewear – Part 3: Sunglasses for running, cycling and similar active lifestyles.

A solar eclipse . . . not just something to SAFELY look at.
