ASQ Montreal — Business Plan 2024-25 — Q1 Report

Back in September 2023, I presented what your Montreal Section leadership team was looking ahead for the 2024 line-up of action plans based on ASQ’s continuing development of its own Strategic Plan. Basically, our Business Plan lists what steps the section will be taking to achieve specific goals. It is broken down into actionable steps that can be easily followed and tracked so as to clarify what resources will be required to reach it within a specific timeline. Here is the status of our goals and what we have accomplished so far in the first quarter of 2024. As for the 2024 Business Plan Objectives, we are proud to report that for the 27 objectives that we defined, so far 24 are 90% completed, 22 at 80% and 19 at 70%. What a Q1 report, indeed!

1. DELIVER MEMBER VALUE: Design programs and initiatives that are diversified and add value to membership, meet/exceed their identified needs and expectations and support the Mission of ASQ. Think out of the Box to WOW members.
1.1 Deliver events and opportunities that address evolving needs of current and next generation quality professionals to ensure each has an optimized member experience. 8 5
1.2 Help quality professionals understand how they can guide their organizations by leveraging standards to achieve operational excellence by publishing multimedia on the use of standards. 3 –
2. ENHANCE THE ASQ BRAND AND PUBLIC IMAGE: Highlight Quality experts and provide Quality knowledge growth opportunities in your community and others.
2.1 Create opportunities to showcase knowledge of Quality subject matter experts by publishing multimedia on ASQ Montreal Section subject matter experts. 3 –
2.2 Generate opportunities for training, learning, and education in Quality:
• Offer and publicize the offering of ASQ certification preparation courses; 9 4
• Promote ASQ in local industry conferences by attending local industry conferences with the intent to promote ASQ; 1 –
• Conduct Student Outreach events by doing networking session with educational institution(s)/students; 1 1
• Recognize section leaders and/or members: Present awards to section leaders and/or members having demonstrated section leadership and involvement. 2 –
3. DELIVER OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE: Leverage the expertise of Quality Professionals to ensure best practices in Diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEI&B) culture, member experiences, efficient operations, access to quality content and education, governance, and financial responsibility are implemented to support ASQ and Geographic Communities.
3.1  Advance a culture of DEI&B to make the Society a place everyone feels welcome:
• Engage francophone members and customers through sponsored French professional events; 2 2
• Have Section Leadership Team (SLT) attend a course on DEI&B; 1 –
• Develop a DEI&B plan. 1 –
3.2 Deliver a greater member experience and make it easier for ASQ members to participate and make their voices heard:
• Issue regular newsletters throughout the active part of the year; 9 4
• Post content on myASQ website targeting member feedback. 4 –
3.3 Drive efficiency and manage resources responsibly by meeting the approved budget bottom line and taking into account adjustments made throughout the year. 1 –
3.4 Contribute content to the myASQ community site to reach members across channels by posting content on the Montreal Section myASQ website. 4 4
3.5 Create meaningful learning and networking opportunities.

3.6 Deliver Geographic Community minimum requirements:
• Acknowledge the Member Unit Operating Agreement (MUOA); 1 1

En janvier dernier, je vous parlais de nos objectifs pour 2024. Vous souvenez-vous ?

Je vous en avais exprimé trois, soit :

  • Mettre l’accent sur la valeur apportée à nos membres ;
  • Continuer d’amplifier nos efforts de sensibilisation ;
  • Revoir et améliorer nos outils et techniques de communication.
Je vous invite à me faire parvenir vos idées d’événements pour l’automne 2024, partager vos commentaires et suggestions qui pourraient nous aider à vous livrer une expérience membre enrichissante et à la hauteur de vos attentes.

En parallèle à ces objectifs, nous avons aussi testé un outil afin de rationaliser nos outils pour les inscriptions à nos événements. Ce test s’est avéré ne pas répondre à nos critères et nous avons donc pris la décision de retourner sur Eventbrite pour partager nos activités et gérer les inscriptions. Nous continuerons, bien entendu, de partager le tout sur nos pages Montreal ASQ, MyASQ et LinkedIn.

  • Focus on the value we bring to our members;
  • Continue to amplify our awareness-raising efforts;
  • Review and improve our communication tools and techniques.

I invite you to send me your event ideas for fall 2024, and share your comments and suggestions that could help us deliver a rewarding member experience that lives up to your expectations.

In parallel with these objectives, we also tested a tool to streamline our event registration process. This test proved not to meet our criteria, so we decided to return to Eventbrite to share our events and manage registrations. We will, of course, continue to share everything on our various pages ASQ Montreal, MyASQ and LinkedIn .

I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events on May 29 and June 12.

En mars nous avons eu deux événements fort intéressants! Le 19 mars avec les étudiants en gestion des opérations de l’ESG UQAM nous avons eu le plaisir de participer à un panel: Les progiciels dans les opérations – entre mythe et réalité. Nous en profitons pour remercier Maxence Zoundi, Pierre Marquis, Michael Guirguis et David Tozer pour leur générosité.

Le 21 mars, cette fois c’est avec les étudiants de l’École Polytechnique que nous avons eu le plaisir d’assister à une conférence de Pierre Marquis sur L’intersection de l’ingénierie et la qualité. Nos remerciements à monsieur Marquis d’avoir partagé son expertise.

In March we had two very noteworthy events! On the 19th we were with the operation management students of UQAM’s Business School (ESG), where we held a panel on The Myths vs. Reality of ERPs in Operations. And on March 21st. it was with the students of the École Polytechnique that had the pleasure of attending a conference by Pierre Marquis on the Intersection between Engineering and Quality. We want to thank Mr. Marquis for sharing his expertise.

C’est avec un immense plaisir que ce 3 avril 2024, notre vice-président de la section, Raymond Dyer, à reçu en direct, Christophe Dubois (en France) et Yoann Donat, (à Granby, Québec) de la compagnie Deltamu.

Christophe s’est spécialisé dans la formation et l’accompagnement des industriels et passionné par les possibilités d’une métrologie correctement réalisée et curieux de l’évolution de la science de la mesure dans l’Industrie du Futur. Il est un membre actif du CFM (Collège Français de Métrologie) et surtout, de la commission AFNOR X07b METROLOGIE, ou il est représentant au groupe de travail WG27 ISO sur la révision de l’ISO 10012. Le comité a envoyée sa version finale à tous les membres pour validation.

Yoann Donat nous à d’abord dressé un bref portrait de Deltamu, créée il y a plus de vingt ans et implantée au Québec depuis 2022.

Ensuite, Christophe Dubois 2024en introduction, Christophe nous a présenté son constat quant à ces 15 années d’expérience en tant que consultant dans le domaine du test dans l’industrie: Bien que la mesure est un réel besoin industriel, la métrologie opérationnelle est souvent restreinte à la gestion de parc d’instruments et que le processus de mesure n’est pas toujours maîtrisée. Il s’avère que l’on passerais plus de temps à concevoir un produit et presque rien sur la validation de tolérances non fonctionnelles, mal définies et trop restreintes pour pallier les non-conformités. En conséquence: On ne voit pas réellement les problèmes car les mesures sont inadaptées et on fait de la sur-qualité; les incertitudes, notion fondamentale de la mesure, ne sont pas prise en compte.

ISO 10012 Chapters-2024

Christophe nous a ensuite dressé un portrait des différences et complémentarités entre les normes ISO/IEC 17025 Laboratoires d’étalonnages et d’essais et ISO 10012:2003 Systèmes de management de la mesure. La première permet aux laboratoires de démontrer leur compétence et leur capacité à produire des résultats valides (le comment), renforçant ainsi la confiance qui leur est accordée au niveau national et partout dans le monde, alors que la seconde est destinée à fournir des exigences génériques et des guides d’application pour le management des processus de mesure et pour la confirmation des équipements de mesure utilisés pour démontrer la conformité aux exigences métrologiques (le pourquoi).

Le gros des activités du groupe de travail sur la révision de l’ISO 10012 a été de la moderniser, de la rendre ‘auditable’ et d’organiser sa structure selon la structure harmonisé (HS, Harmonized Structure) typique des autres normes ISO selon un corpus commun de termes et de définitions. Ensuite, il nous a fait visiter les différents chapitres du contenu afin d’expliquer le pourquoi et ce que la norme permettra aux entreprises de réaliser.

Ouf! Une heure ce n’était pas assez. Raymond à proposer de faire revenir Christophe pour une plus longue présentation sur ce sujet, certainement après janvier 2025, date à laquelle il est prévu que la norme sera publiée.

Pour ceux qui ont manqué cet événement, j’espère vous voir et vous rencontrer la prochaine fois.

On April 3, 2024, it was with great pleasure that our Section Vice-chair, Raymond Dyer, welcomed Christophe Dubois (in France) and Yoann Donat (in Granby, Quebec) of Deltamu.

Christophe Dubois specializes in training and support for manufacturers, and is passionate about the possibilities of correctly performed metrology, and curious about the evolution of measurement science in the Industry of the Future. He is an active member of the CFM (Collège Français de Métrologie) and, above all, of the AFNOR X07b METROLOGIE commission, where he is a representative on the WG27 ISO working group on the revision of ISO 10012. The committee sent its final version to all members for validation.

ISO 10012 Chapters PDCA 2024Yoann Donat drew us a brief portrait of Deltamu, created over twenty years ago and established in Quebec since 2022.

By way of introduction, Christophe then shared with us his observations based on 15 years’ experience as a consultant in the field of industrial testing: Although measurement is a real industrial need, operational metrology is often restricted to instrument management, and the measurement process is not always mastered. It turns out that we spend more time designing a product and almost nothing on validating tolerances that are non-functional, ill-defined and too restricted to compensate for non-conformities. As a result, you don’t really see the problems, because the measurements are inadequate, and you over-qualify; uncertainties, a fundamental notion in measurement, are not taken into account.

Christophe then outlined the differences and complementarities between ISO/IEC 17025 Calibration and testing laboratories and ISO 10012:2003 Measurement management systems. The former enables laboratories to demonstrate their competence and ability to produce valid results (the how), thus reinforcing the confidence placed in them nationally and worldwide, while the latter is intended to provide generic requirements and application guides for the management of measurement processes and for the confirmation of measurement equipment used to demonstrate conformity to metrological requirements (the why).

The main activities of the ISO 10012 revision working group were to modernize the standard, make it “auditable” and organize its structure according to the Harmonized Structure (HS) typical of other ISO standards, based on a common corpus of terms and definitions. He then took us on a tour of the various content chapters to explain why and what the standard will enable companies to achieve.

Whew! One hour wasn’t enough. Raymond suggested that we bring Christophe back for a longer presentation on this subject, certainly after January 2025, when the standard is due to be published.

J’ai du mal à croire que nous venons de terminer le premier trimestre de l’année!

Il me semble que cette année est déjà extrêmement longue. D’un point de vue très personnel, l’année a commencé par des moments difficiles. J’ai perdu mon père après qu’il se soit battu gracieusement et courageusement contre la maladie de Parkinson pendant de nombreuses années. Au cours de sa vie, mon père était un passionné d’avions. Depuis son plus jeune âge, il regardait toujours le ciel pour voir quel avion allait passer au-dessus de sa tête. Il aimait tellement les avions qu’il en a fait son métier. Il a travaillé comme mécanicien et représentant technique à la clientèle. Sa passion pour les avions m’a été transmise, mais pas de la même manière. La mécanique ne m’intéresse pas, mais j’aime bien utiliser les avions pour voyager et découvrir de nouveaux endroits. ✈️✈️

Pourquoi est-ce que je vous parle de mon père? Parce qu’il m’a inculqué un sens aigu du devoir, du professionnalisme et de la qualité. Il m’a toujours poussé à fournir les efforts nécessaires pour exceller dans ce que je choisissais de faire. Il me disait aussi qu’un 93% n’était pas suffisant quand je ramenais mes notes de l’école 😬, il me poussait à viser le 100 %.  💯

Je crois que ce sont ses enseignements qui m’ont conduit à cette carrière, à vouloir faire mieux, à m’améliorer, à toujours viser l’excellence et à toujours travailler avec mes collègues pour qu’ensemble nous puissions arriver à un meilleur résultat.

En découvrant ce monde, j’ai rencontré des personnes extraordinaires ! Certaines d’entre elles font partie de l’équipe de leadership de cette section, d’autres sont des personnes que j’ai rencontrées lors de nos événements et conférences. Aujourd’hui, je veux prendre un moment pour vous remercier tous! Merci d’avoir été là pour moi lorsque j’ai eu besoin de soutien pendant cette période difficile de l’année. Merci pour votre ouverture à essayer de nouvelles choses et à découvrir de nouvelles façons de faire pour notre section. Merci d’avoir travaillé à mes côtés pour viser l’excellence.

En ce qui concerne l’ASQ, j’ai été ravi que nous ayons organisé un événement en personne en mars. Je l’attendais depuis longtemps et j’ai vraiment apprécié de voir et de rencontrer les personnes présentes. J’espère que ces événements se multiplieront, car je crois sincèrement qu’ils sont essentiels pour établir un réseau. Nous avons également commencé à utiliser une nouvelle plateforme d’inscription, appelée MemberPlanet, conformément aux indications de l’ASQ. Nous apprenons au fur et à mesure que nous l’utilisons, et vous verrez donc probablement quelques ajustements au fur et à mesure que nous en apprenons davantage sur le sujet. Nous utilisons également beaucoup plus notre page d’entreprise LinkedIn pour partager des nouvelles et des informations avec vous. En mars, nous avons présenté toutes les femmes de l’équipe de leadership et en avril, nous continuerons à présenter les autres membres de notre direction. I’m having a hard time believing that we just finished the first quarter of the year!

To me, it seems that this year is already extremely long. You see, on a very personal note, the year started off with difficult moments. I lost my dad after he graciously and courageously fought Parkinson’s disease for many years. During his life, my dad was an airplane aficionado. Since he was a young boy, he always looked up to the sky to see what plane would be flying over his head. He loved airplanes so much that he made it his career. He worked as a mechanic and as technical customer support. His passion for planes did transfer over to me but not in the same way. I could not be interested by the mechanics, but I do rather enjoy using planes to travel and discover new places.✈️✈️

So why am I telling you about my dad? Because he instilled in me a strong sense of duty, of professionalism, and of quality. He would always push me to put in the required efforts so that I could excel in what I chose to do. He would also tell me that a 93% was not good enough when I brought back my grades from school 😬, he pushed for me to aim for 100%. 💯

I do believe that his teachings are what led me to this career, to wanting to do better, to improve, to always aim for excellence, and to always work with my colleagues so that together we can get to a better place.

In discovering this world, I got to meet amazing people! Some of them are part of the leadership team of this section, others are people that I met through our events and conferences. And today, I want to take a moment to thank you all! Thank you for being there for me when I needed support during this difficult part of the year. Thank you for your openness in trying new things and discovering new ways of doing things for our section. Thank you for pushing alongside me to aim for excellence.

On the ASQ side of business, I was thrilled that we had an in-person event in March. It was long overdue, and I really enjoyed seeing and meeting the people that attended. I’m looking forward to more of these events as I truly believe that they are critical to establishing a network. We also started using a new platform for registration, called MemberPlanet, as per ASQ’s indications. We are learning as we are using it, so you will probably see some adjustments as we learn more about it. We are also using our LinkedIn company page a lot more to share news and information with you. In March we introduced all the women of the LT and in April, we will continue to introduce the other members of our leadership. Go by our LinkedIn page and say Hi!

The student outreach committee has been preparing two events for March 2024.

1) First, at  the École des Sciences de la Gestion (ÉSG) of UQAM, we are meeting with the Operations Management group to discuss ERPs on March 19.

La qualité et la gestion des opérations

Le 29 novembre dernier, quatre membres de la Section de Montréal ont participé à un panel d’informations sur la qualité à l’UQAM. Les conférenciers ont présentés la notion de qualité, les horizons en qualité et leurs parcours dans chacun des domaines dans lesquels ils exercent. Ce panel était organisé par le Comité des Etudiants du certificat en Gestion des opérations (CEGOps) de l’université dans le cadre de conférences sur divers sujets sur la gestion d’opérations. Rappelons que cet événement fait partie des efforts de l’équipe de direction de la section pour notre programme de sensibilisation étudiante. Son objectif — promouvoir et sensibiliser les étudiants aux domaines de la qualité et les services offerts par l’ASQ et la section.

CEGOps-ASQ Panel Participants 2023.11.29On November 29, four members of the Montreal Section of ASQ took part in an information panel on quality at UQAM. The speakers presented the concept of quality, quality horizons and their backgrounds in each of the fields in which they work. The panel was organized by the university’s Comité des Etudiants du Certificat en Gestion des Opérations (CEGOps) as part of a series of conferences on a variety of operations management topics. This event is part of the chapter management team’s efforts to promote our student outreach program. Its objective — to promote and sensitize students to the fields of quality and the services offered by ASQ and the Section.

C’est avec beaucoup d’honneur et d’enthousiasme que j’assume le rôle de présidente de l’ASQ Montréal. Alors que nous entamons ensemble ce nouveau chapitre, je me sens très honorée par l’occasion qui m’est donnée de servir cette communauté, fondée sur l’excellence et le dévouement à la qualité dans tous les aspects de nos activités professionnelles.

Je tiens à exprimer ma profonde gratitude à mon prédécesseur et à l’ensemble de l’équipe dirigeante pour leur engagement, qui a permis de jeter les bases solides de notre croissance et de notre progression. Je me réjouis de construire sur cette base et de travailler avec chacun d’entre vous pour élever notre section vers de nouveaux sommets. La section a été dirigée par des personnes dynamiques, professionnelles et engagées dans le passé, j’ai donc de grandes responsabilités à assumer!

En 2024, nos objectifs sont:

  1. Mettre l’accent sur la valeur apportée à nos membres: Nous continuerons à offrir des ressources solides, des possibilités de réseautage et l’accès à des pratiques de pointe. Nous continuerons à favoriser un environnement qui encourage la collaboration, l’apprentissage et l’échange d’idées. Grâce à des séminaires, des ateliers et des forums attrayants, nous visons à faciliter le partage des connaissances et à doter nos membres des outils nécessaires pour naviguer dans un paysage en constante évolution.
  2. Continuer d’amplifier nos efforts de sensibilisation: Nous aspirons non seulement à améliorer l’expérience de nos membres actuels, mais aussi à accueillir de nouvelles perspectives. Comme nous l’avons fait en 2023, avec des événements à l’Université Concordia, à Ecole Polytechnique et à l’UQAM, nos initiatives de sensibilisation s’étendront aux professionnels et aux étudiants en devenir, nourrissant ainsi la prochaine génération de leaders en matière de qualité.
  3. Revoir et améliorer nos outils et techniques de communication: Pour vous apporter encore plus de valeur, plus d’informations et créer une communauté engagée. Nous continuerons à exploiter nos outils existants et LinkedIn, et nous proposerons également de nouveaux moyens d’accroître notre portée et de créer plus de valeur.

J’invite chacun d’entre vous à participer activement, à s’engager et à contribuer à la réalisation de notre vision commune. Vos idées et votre dévouement sont la force motrice de notre succès. Unissons-nous dans notre poursuite de l’excellence, en tirant parti de notre expertise collective pour façonner l’avenir de la profession de la qualité.

J’attends avec impatience le parcours à venir, rempli d’efforts, de collaboration, de discussions perspicaces et de réalisations collectives. Ensemble, nous continuerons à créer une communauté attrayante où nous pouvons nous soutenir mutuellement, apprendre les uns des autres et grandir ensemble.

It is with great honour and enthusiasm that I step into the role of Chair for ASQ Montreal. As we embark on this new chapter together, I am humbled by the opportunity to serve this community, built on a foundation of excellence and dedication to quality in all aspects of our professional endeavours.

I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to my predecessor and the entire leadership team for their commitment, laying down a strong groundwork for our growth and advancement. I am excited to build upon this foundation and work alongside each of you to elevate our section to new heights. The section has been led by dynamic, professional, and engaged people in the past, so I have big shoes to fill!

For 2024, our goals are:

  1. Focus on value for our members: We will continue to offer robust resources, networking opportunities, and access to cutting-edge practices. We will continue to foster an environment that encourages collaboration, learning, and exchange of ideas. Through engaging seminars, workshops, and forums, we aim to facilitate knowledge sharing and equip our members with the tools necessary to navigate an ever-evolving landscape.
  2. Continue to amplify our outreach efforts: We aspire not only to enhance the experiences of our current members but also to welcome fresh perspectives. As we did in 2023, with events at Concordia University, Ecole Polytechnique and UQAM, our outreach initiatives will extend to aspiring professionals and students, nurturing the next generation of leaders in quality.
  3. Review and improve our communication tools and techniques: To bring you even more value, more insights, and create an engaged community. We will continue to leverage our existing tools and LinkedIn, and we will also bring about new ways to further our reach and create more value.

I invite each of you to actively participate, engage, and contribute to the realization of our shared vision. Your insights and dedication are the driving force behind our success. Let us unite in our pursuit of excellence, leveraging our collective expertise to shape the future of the quality profession.

I eagerly anticipate the journey ahead, filled with collaborative efforts, insightful discussions, and collective achievements. Together, we will continue to create an engaging community where we can support each other, learn from each other, and grow together.

M. Pareto Head — Goodbye | Au-revoir

In ASQ’s January issue of Quality Progress (QP), Mike Crossen, the comic’s creator, announced the final Mr. Pareto Head comic to appear in QP along with his cast of co-workers: Sigma Freud, Randy M. Sample, Norma Distribution, Charlie Chance and Mr. Bottomline. Crossen, said he knew that eventually the strip would come to an end and found himself thinking about the strip more recently. After nearly 24 years, “it just seemed that heading into this new year was a good time to let it go and focus on my other interests.”

Mr. Pareto Head debuted in March 2000 and in introducing the cartoon, Miles Maguire, then editor of QP, explained that the strip was “in response to a letter to the editor decrying the lack of humour in our pages.”

Mike Crossen is lean enterprise manager at Rockwell Automation in Mayfield Heights, Ohio. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electronics technology from Cleveland State University and is a senior member of ASQ and an ASQ-certified manager of quality/organizational excellence, quality auditor and quality engineer.

ASQ members and QP readers will still be able to access an archive of Mr. Pareto Head comic strips dating back to 2000 and QP will also be running Mr. Pareto Head classics in the coming months. Dans le numéro de janvier de Quality Progress (QP) de l’ASQ, Mike Crossen, le créateur de la bande dessinée, a annoncé la publication de la dernière bande dessinée de M. Pareto Head dans QP, avec ses collègues : Sigma Freud, Randy M. Sample, Norma Distribution, Charlie Chance et M. Bottomline. Crossen a déclaré qu’il savait que la bande dessinée finirait par prendre fin et qu’il y pensait encore récemment après avoir passé près de 24 ans : “Il m’a semblé qu’à l’aube de cette nouvelle année, c’était le bon moment pour laisser tomber et me concentrer sur mes autres centres d’intérêt.“

ASQ Certification – Recertification

Of all the multiple benefits that the American Society for Quality (ASQ) offers, its most important is certification, a formal recognition that an individual has demonstrated a proficiency within, and comprehension of, a specific body of knowledge. Five of these certification programs achieved ISO 17024 Personnel Certification Documentation Consultancy accreditation by ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB). Over 400,000 certifications have been issued to dedicated professionals worldwide.

On October 17, 2023, Dr David Tozer, our Section’s Education and Re-certification Chair was invited by the ASQ Canada Region to explain, in a simple straightforward approach, what 18 ASQ Certifications were available. He explained how ASQ’s Certification Pathways Tool could be used to identify which ASQ Certification was right for you and that another option was to seek advice from the local Section’s Education &/or Certification &/or Recertification Chairs.

Because applying and demonstrating proficiency for certification can be a little complicated, David then gave an overview of the basic requirements and preparation for the exams, the courses and the support that are available. He also went over the typical Experience requirements (Years / Decision Making) and hours of Preparation required for each type of certification.

To show the parallel with the various certifications, David then referenced the typical Career paths in which a quality professional might evolve in his career years, such as: Quality Planning; Risk Management; Fixing Issues; Continuous Improvement; Assessment; Training and reminding and Implementation and the certifications ASQ offers. In closing, he presented how recertification would be maintained: either by obtaining 18 recertification units (RUs) within a three-year recertification period or by retaking the certification exam at the end of that period.

He also suggested to participants that in order to gain an advantage over their competition, they should consider investing in their career by obtaining an ASQ certification. By the way, ASQ online exams and communication with a proctor will be conducted in English only.

PS: The Montreal section offers refresher courses on various ASQ Certifications. You can register for these courses, even if you are not an ASQ member. Company group rates available. Courses are offered from September through to June. Interested? Visit our Education Program page. History has shown refresher courses attendees have more than twice the certification success rate than those who don’t follow courses.

ASQ Certifications

Parmi les multiples avantages qu’offre l’American Society for Quality (ASQ), le plus important est la certification, une reconnaissance formelle qu’un individu a démontré sa compétence et sa compréhension d’un ensemble spécifique de connaissances. Cinq de ses programmes de certification ont obtenu l’accréditation ISO 17024 Personnel Certification Documentation Consultancy par l’ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB). Plus de 400 000 certifications ont été délivrées à des professionnels dans le monde entier.

Le 17 octobre 2023, le Dr David Tozer, responsable de notre section pour l’éducation et le renouvellement de la certification, a été invité par la région canadienne de l’ASQ à expliquer, d’une manière simple et directe, quelles étaient les 18 certifications ASQ disponibles. Il a expliqué comment le Certification Pathways Tool (l’outil de cheminement vers la certification d’ASQ) pouvait être utilisé pour déterminer quelle certification ASQ vous convenait le mieux et qu’une autre option consistait à demander conseil aux responsable de la section locale chargés de la formation et/ou de la certification et/ou de la recertification.

Comme il peut être un peu compliqué de faire une demande de certification et de démontrer ses compétences, David a ensuite donné un aperçu des exigences de base et de la préparation aux examens, des cours et de l’aide disponible. Il a également passé en revue les exigences typiques en matière d’expérience (années / prise de décision) et les heures de préparation requises pour chaque type de certification.

Pour illustrer le parallèle avec les différentes certifications, David a ensuite fait référence aux parcours professionnels typiques dans lesquels un professionnel de la qualité peut évoluer au cours de sa carrière, tels que: la planification de la qualité, la gestion des risques, la résolution des problèmes, l’amélioration continue, l’évaluation, la formation, le rappel et la mise en œuvre, ainsi que les certifications proposées par l’ASQ. Pour conclure, il a ensuite présenté la manière dont la recertification serait maintenue: soit en obtenant 18 unités de recertification (UR) au cours d’une période de recertification de trois ans, soit en repassant l’examen de certification à la fin de cette période.

Il a également suggéré aux participants d’envisager d’investir dans leur carrière en obtenant une certification ASQ afin d’avoir un avantage sur leurs concurrents. Par ailleurs, les examens en ligne de l’ASQ et la communication avec un surveillant se dérouleront uniquement en anglais.

PS: La section de Montréal offre des cours de mise à jour sur diverses certifications ASQ. Vous pouvez vous inscrire à ces cours, même si vous n’êtes pas membre de l’ASQ. Des tarifs de groupe sont disponibles. Les cours sont offerts de septembre à juin. Intéressé(e)? Visitez notre page Programme d’éducation. L’histoire a montré que les participants aux cours de remise à niveau ont un taux de réussite à la certification plus de deux fois supérieur à celui des personnes qui ne suivent pas de cours.

What a change of pace for those present.

This past September 27th, 2023, Avrum Goldman shared with us a simple message on his life’s work to date which I would summarize as: Life is a tree with many branches where sometimes you get to choose which sprout to follow and sometimes you’re just ‘up a tree’ and you must deal with it.

It may not sound very philosophical, but what would you learn from someone who has spent 38 years in one company, has worked with or led teams in just about all the company’s product lines, as well as in different capacities and under various situations: flexibility, capability and continuous learning.

It all started after Avrum was hired for his first job just out of university. The day he showed up for work, his ‘new boss’ told him he didn’t have any work for him and then went door to door to see what he could find him to do. If that’s not an indication that you are headed for something different . . .  and so it went, as he described the evolution of his career and his discovery of the ‘quality’ field – brought about by his methodical approach to resolve situations and led by his background in Engineering – a complementary duality of interactions of the disciplines.

Avrum worked at Pratt & Whitney Canada in six major fields (blue) and held over 17 job functions/product lines (bubbles). Some were attributed, some for which he aimed and postulated for and even others that were handed to him because of his aptitudes at problem solving (right time-right place). He illustrated this evolution with a tall and leafy oak tree with red and blue arrows, illustrating the not-chosen and his chosen career paths.

He then shared a number of Case Studies to illustrate these various dualities:

  • The complementarity of the aerospace Quality system and Regulatory oversight – QMSP (Quality Management System Procedures) and the SMSP (Safety Management System Procedures);
  • Engineering compliance and Quality conformity;
  • Quality system project leadership (Dedicated team for new/change of state – Legacy team for stable operations);
  • Program sustainability and quality where the process requires support from different disciplines and responsibilities;
  • Human error and Human performance – understanding how the human at the controls expects the equipment to perform;
  • Human factors and Individual responsibility – Planned checklists and Assignable causes.

Finally, Avrum proposed his personal takeaways and recommendations:

  • Your capability: Don’t feel constrained by your current degree/credentials. You have a portfolio of skills and capabilities you can apply in the broadest and most creative way.
  • Your mandate: Don’t feel constrained to your current job description. Define your role to contribute to your organization’s greatest challenges.
  • Lifelong learning and teaching: You can always use more knowledge, invest in yourself! Seek out and leverage all sources of knowledge.
  • Multi-disciplinary approach: Engineering, Quality, Continuous Improvement, Airworthiness, Safety, Reliability, Leadership: All different aspects of the same process.
  • Value-stream approach: Technology development/Process development/Product development/Operations/Customer Support/MRO: All parts of the same process.

To quote Billy of The Family Circus: “The shortest distance between two points may be a straight line, but it’s the least interesting too.” (a cartoon character of the 60’s by Bil and Jeff Keane, Wikipedia)

Indeed an interesting ‘quality’ career.

Quel changement de rythme pour les personnes présentes.

Ce 27 septembre 2023, Avrum Goldman a partagé avec nous un message simple sur l’œuvre de sa vie jusqu’à ce jour, que je résumerais ainsi: La vie est un arbre aux multiples branches, où l’on peut parfois choisir la pousse que l’on veut suivre, et où l’on est parfois tout simplement “dans le bois” et il faut faire avec.

Cela ne semble peut-être pas très philosophique, mais qu’apprendrait-on de quelqu’un qui a passé 38 ans dans une seule entreprise, qui a travaillé avec ou dirigé des équipes dans presque toutes les lignes de produits de l’entreprise, ainsi qu’à différents titres et dans diverses situations – la flexibilité, la capacité et l’apprentissage continu.

Tout a commencé lorsqu’Avrum a été embauché pour son premier emploi, à peine sorti de l’université. Le jour où il s’est présenté au travail, son “nouveau patron” lui a dit qu’il n’avait pas de travail pour lui et a fait du porte-à-porte pour voir ce qu’il pouvait lui trouver à faire. Si ce n’est pas une indication que vous vous dirigez vers quelque chose de différent . . . et c’est ainsi qu’il a décrit l’évolution de sa carrière et sa découverte du domaine de la “qualité”, grâce à son approche méthodique de la résolution des situations et à sa formation d’ingénieur – une dualité complémentaire d’interactions entre les disciplines.

Avrum a travaillé chez Pratt & Whitney Canada dans six domaines principaux (bleu) et a occupé plus de 17 fonctions et lignes de produits (bulles). Certaines lui ont été attribuées, d’autres pour lesquelles il a visé et postulé, et même d’autres qui lui ont été confiées en raison de ses aptitudes à résoudre les problèmes (bon moment, bon endroit). Il a illustré cette évolution par un grand chêne feuillu avec des flèches rouges et bleues, illustrant les parcours professionnels non choisis et choisis.

Il nous a ensuite présenté un certain nombre d’études de cas pour illustrer ces différentes dualités:

  • La complémentarité du système de qualité aérospatial et de la surveillance réglementaire – QMSP (procédures du système de gestion de la qualité) et SMSP (procédures du système de gestion de la sécurité);
  • Conformité de l’ingénierie et conformité de la qualité;
  • La direction du projet de système de qualité (équipe spécialisée pour les nouveaux projets ou les changements d’état – équipe traditionnelle pour les opérations stables);
  • Durabilité et qualité du programme lorsque le processus nécessite le soutien de différentes disciplines et responsabilités;
  • Erreur humaine et performance humaine – comprendre comment l’homme aux commandes s’attend à ce que l’équipement fonctionne;
  • Facteurs humains et responsabilité individuelle – listes de contrôle planifiées et causes assignables.

Et enfin, Avrum nous a présenté ses conclusions et recommandations personnelles:

  • Vos capacités: Ne vous sentez pas limité par vos diplômes/compétences actuels. Vous disposez d’un portefeuille de compétences et de capacités que vous pouvez utiliser de la manière la plus large et la plus créative possible.
  • Votre mandat: Ne vous sentez pas limité à votre description de poste actuelle. Définissez votre rôle pour contribuer à relever les plus grands défis de votre organisation.
  • L’apprentissage et enseignement tout au long de la vie: Vous pouvez toujours utiliser plus de connaissances, investissez dans vous-même! Recherchez et exploitez toutes les sources de connaissances.
  • L’approche pluridisciplinaire: Ingénierie, qualité, amélioration continue, navigabilité, sécurité, fiabilité, leadership: Tous les différents aspects d’un même processus.
  • L’approche par flux de valeur: Développement technologique/développement de processus/développement de produits/opérations/soutien à la clientèle/MRO: Tous les éléments d’un même processus.
