  • Pouvoir définir la qualité;
  • Connaître l’existence des normes de qualité ISO;
  • Identifier les qualités requises d’un gestionnaire en qualité performant;
  • S’informer sur les nouveautés en qualité: “ARI et AI”;

SUMMARY OF THE PRESENTATION MADE TO HEC MONTRÉAL’S GRADUATE STUDENTS in OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT AND LOGISTICS

PowerPoint presentation by Pierre MARQUIS, assisted by Ray DYER. Christine BERGERON helped write the ASQ section.

On Friday January 31, 2025, Ray DYER, Sam WEISSFELNER and Pierre MARQUIS were received by lecturer Michel LEFEBVRE, to inform his students about the basics of an ISO-certified quality system, the qualities required of a quality manager, the involvement of artificial intelligence (AI) in quality and the advantages of being an ASQ member.

The objectives of the presentation were:

  • To be able to define quality;
  • Learn about ISO quality standards;
  • Identify the qualities required of a successful quality manager;
  • Learn about new developments in quality: “ARI and AI”;
  • Recognize the role of ASQ and the benefits of student membership.

The material was presented in PowerPoint format, with each of the fourteen students having a visual on the room’s multiple screens; the presentation is available for future reference. With Ray, Sam and Pierre having several years of experience in quality, the review of their bios was of great interest. The existence of the main ISO standards used in industry was mentioned, including 9001, 14001, 13485, 27001, 45001, AS9100 and the SMIA series of standards: ISO/IEC 42001, 42005, 42006.

Ray spoke about the future student sponsorship program, coming in the spring of 2025, the 18 certifications offered by ASQ and the existence of the ASQ Montreal chapter since 1950 and LinkedIn page; a LinkedIn connection invitation to the audience was also offered by Ray and Pierre.

Sam sparked general interest by pointing out that Montreal is home to one of the world’s three aeronautics hubs, as well as considerable expertise in AI and life sciences.

Ray captivated the students by recounting the importance of finding the root cause of problems with the people doing the work, through his example of eliminating explosions in an explosives manufacturing plant. Pierre mentioned that the 8D method was prized, if not obligatory, by many aerospace customers.

After a brief question and answer period, course instructor Michel Lefebvre congratulated the presenters and reiterated his interest in repeating the experience in the future.

ASQ Montreal Section – Education Program 2025

ASQ Certification often leads to higher paying employment. The money invested in education and certification increases chances of finding employment quickly in the down sizing environment we live in.  People who take the section sponsored refresher courses, and spend at least twice as much time as spent in the classroom on self study, have an 80%, or better, chance of passing the examination on the first attempt.

Having ASQ certification gives you an edge in the market and can significantly increase your income.

Although this picture is from last year’s Super Bowl, it lends itself better to the results of this year’s contest.

Michael Bournazian

During the summer of 2024, a colleague of mine at work (Siemens Energy Canada) told me that they were organizing a workshop for the company’s Internal Quality group. Knowing that I am with the ASQ Montreal Section, they asked if it might be possible for someone within ASQ to come and give a Quality-related presentation during the workshop.

After a few discussions, both internally within our Section Leadership Team, as well as with the workshop organizers, our Section Education Chair Dr. David Tozer was present on-site on November 19, 2024 to help kick off the workshop.

As per David’s own words: “The presentation at Siemens Energy Canada, on 19 November, was a success.  The main focus of the presentation was the formation of a quality steering committee, and getting people to work on real issues affecting everyone.  The session was very interactive and some consensus was built on how to proceed.  The event I lead was followed up in the afternoon with more expansion of the way to go.

I was able to attend the session and some of the pictures I took are below.

In short, it felt good to help organize David’s visit and presentation, as well as see the ASQ Montreal Section contributing to the Quality profession “out in the field”.

As usual, November brings to an end our Section’s event activities, as well as Newsletter activities until January of the following year.

So I would like to take this opportunity, as I have in previous November issues of this Newsletter, to wish everyone a joyous holiday season. However you celebrate, I hope it is filled with peace and love.

See you in 2025.
